The nine picture books cited in Mahmoud v. Taylor are not pornography. Nor are they obscene. What is obscene is a Supreme Court decision that denies the basic humanity and equality of LGBTQIA+ people.

This is absolutely book banning, despite the minister's denials, and I have no doubt that LGBTQ+ books will be targeted. But also- many Alberta teachers and librarians are deeply committed to queer inclusion and to readers' rights and will continue to fight book bans.

Alito's opinion in Mahmoud v. Taylor is poisonous homophobia that gives parents a de facto right to ban books in public school classrooms. It's violently stigmatizing toward LGBTQ families and filled with lies and bigotry. Every justice who joined it should be ashamed. slate.com/news-and-pol...

Yesterday- the day after the ruling on Mahmoud v Taylor- @whatwouldjuliedraw.bsky.social and I read Pride Puppy to kids and families at a Queer and Trans Farmers Market. It was a good reminder of why we wrote the book. So much queer joy. Happy Pride, friends.
