The work slowed down a little bit this week so I took some time to learn about web components, JavaScript, and subgrid. I also enjoyed celebrating my birthday with most of my family (just missing my son).

I celebrated my birthday this week and spent time learning about web components, JavaScript, and subgrid. I also put some finishing touches on some projects before taking off the week of Christmas.

Happy birthday to CSS (and to me). Glad to share a birthday with this language that I love and made a career around using.

I got to reuse a masking technique I learned several years ago from @cassiecodes.bsky.social in a new project. I attended Front End Study Hall #42 and enjoyed talking CSS with the other participants.

Really nice site.
Made a site comparing the sizes of living things :)

The great Julius Csotonyi spent 5 months painting over 60 illustrations for the site, no ai used

Had to pull out 80's rock anthems to help me to keep going as I code up a design from Photoshop. I think it has been at least 10 years since I built a design from Photoshop.

I have never been a huge fan of postmodern architecture. (I got my degree in architecture but never practiced.) But I found Gehry's work interesting. I have only see the student union at MIT in person. Wanted to see Guggenheim in Bilboa when I was in Spain but too long a trip.

I enjoyed listening to @allthatmalarkey.bsky.social , @hicks.design, @boagworld.bsky.social , and Marcus on the latest episode of One Footer in the Grave while walking last night. Interesting discussion about different working styles (locations - home, other places).

I got one in 1999. I loved playing on it. My son still played on it till once the parts broke and it would no longer read the discs. He bought a PS4 and I still play on that.
On this day 31 years ago, the Playstation was released.

Nice write-up by @joshwcomeau.com in his latest newsletter where he takes a look at some of the struggles AI still have with CSS, including what looks like a fairly simple example that it simply can't handle, as well as the benefits of deep knowledge.

I enjoyed taking the week off. Got a chance to catch up on some articles in Instapaper, read books, play MLB The Show and NBA 2k25, and spend time with my family.

I created my first scroll-driven animation last week using the CSS animation API. @bram.us 's course has been so helpful in learning the API. Lesson 7, was specifically helpful to help me implement my progressively enhanced solution. Links in my article.

Does anyone know of a way to make scrollbars appear on Mac browsers for scrollable areas on the page? I tried overflow-x: scroll and that is not doing it. Just wondering if there is a way around the Mac settings to force browser to show scrollbar so user knows. @nerdy.dev @kevinpowell.co

I am glad I got out and took a walk this morning. It has been a while since I walked in the morning. It was quiet. I could hear birds and just a fresh feel to the day. I enjoyed the sunshine and warmer weather. Suppose to turn cold on Monday.

"there’s a case to be made that this is a little too clever, in that it could make this code a little more difficult to understand at a glance for anyone that might have to maintain this code after you (or, if you have a memory like mine, for your near-future self)." Good advice from @wil.to
