Manzanita Cooperative, has shut down after the Trump Administration defunded the National Science Foundation (which was funding us previously) & the State of California declined to fund our research. Our work could have saved billions of lives as climate collapse wipes out existing crops.

Another weird modern media thing I've been thinking about is, like, why DIDN'T the web open up better discourse? Why didn't a vast forum, with ready access to information produce more truth? Lots of reasons, I suppose, but I think part of what's going on is actually fairly pre-Internet.

Reminder that the Lorax took the same approach of speaking out and bearing witness that Democrats are taking and it didn't work out so well. Resistance must be active or it's meaningless.

California is in a salmon extinction crisis. Three years of closed fisheries, weak water protections, and delays on Tribal water rights have pushed salmon—and the communities that depend on them—to the brink. It’s time to act on science, Tribal leadership, and real water solutions. #savecasalmon

Read the incredible Bea Wolf ( by @zachweinersmith.bsky.social) to my kids for bedtime again and am seriously considering making it my default gift to parents of children under 10 for holidays and birthdays from now until forever. Just so so good.

In a sane economy, banks would react to the threat of apocalyptic #climatechange by defunding the companies responsible and lending to / investing in people working in solutions instead. www.scientificamerican.com/article/big-...

This is how privatization always works in every country. It is nothing more or less than the looting of public infrastructure.
It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out.

They gut the FAA.
Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted.
Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

The painting is Behind the Myth of Benevolence by Titus Kaphar

US schools have long taught that Thomas Jefferson was a hero, a visionary, and a champion of human liberty. And they did that while erasing Sally Hemmings, whom he enslaved, raped, and impregnated.

States that want to protect their technology industries are going to need to set up state-level equivalents of the cut federal grant programs. Doing so will pay for itself by attracting knowledge based industries to those States.

Happy chosen birthday to one of my heroes, Frederick Douglass. I first read his autobiography when I was 12 and was inspired by his intellect, his humor, his courage, his integrity, and his determination.

If ever I find myself doubting that a person can change the world, I return to his story.
