I'm co-teaching a 4th-year biology course for students doing honours research. The aim is to develop the skills for successful honours completion. We have a syllabus and materials from previous years, but I'm keen to take a fresh look.

I'd love to hear your suggestions about what we should cover.

Happy Canada Day!
28 years ago today, I started my faculty position at UBC. How can that be?
20 years ago, I was got tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor.
Today, I get to update my title to Professor.
I’m pretty excited, and also have a few thoughts.

Sabbatical vibes- chilling with the girls

I started a sabbatical on September 1st, with a bit of a slow start thanks to a parting gift of Covid from one of the (grown) kids I left in Vancouver.
Now in week 2, I've started reading many papers, learning command-line genomics, and wow, my brain is awake!

🧪 I've been thinking about the sum total of knowledge accumulated by researchers about their study systems/ species, and what is lost when a study system goes research-dormant. Is there a place for this knowledge? Kind of like a dating app but with profiles of cool study systems.

Our paper on a process-oriented retrospective concept of species is long — so, here its argument is compressed into a thread of a dozen tweets!
@waynemaddison.bsky.social #SpeciesConcepts (Here is a link to the paper: doi.org/10.18061/bss...)
A new view of #SpeciesConcepts by @jeannettewhitton.bsky.social and me, clarifying time frames while unifying interbreeding, genealogy, and traits. A general-purpose species should be a reproductive community (bound by cohesive processes) viewed retrospectively (RRCC).  doi.org/10.18061/bss...

Now that our paper on species concepts is out, time to update an old post (on that other place) on the XCKD paper title meme.

I'm pretty excited but also have some trepidation about our long-incubated paper being out there. I wrote a bit about my experience, including the struggle here: blogs.ubc.ca/jwhitton/202...
