exactly!! it’s the coherence of it all- no element or plot beat feels out of place or superfluous. certainly other stories go deeper into character relationships and psyches but DM balances its character depth with the needs of narrative pacing excellently.

CSM tomorrow…. whatever happens is going to be determined by the name of the most recently eaten devil, I feel.
It doesn’t feel like a “this is going to come up later as important” sort of deal, this feels more like it’ll lead to immediate consequences

Dungeon Meshi really is my gold standard for pacing, the way to unfold a central mystery, balancing a cast and their individual arcs and tying it all together as a reflection of the overarching narrative. More or less perfect in every regard.

BUT! it hits the emotional moments when it needs to and alternates between humor, horror, despair and good ol fashion shounen (seinen i guess) gusto in a really compelling way in its dissonance
if i had to give a grade, 8/10, would be 10/10 with tighter editing

it just feels like fat that needed to be trimmed, you know? those bits, and the times when a multiple chapter arc ended with the events within it basically being rendered pointless so the entire thing felt like a waste of time (an entertaining one, at least)

and the scope of the cast meaning that multiple groups of characters need to be juggled around and what that leads to multiple times is a group of characters that we have little attachment to (sometimes literally) just dicking around.

these groups in a way that's not particularly engaging to read.
idk if i phrased that very well but it's like... a lot of names are dropped in relation to each other and it's hard to track exactly how all of these people are connected to the driving force of the plot.

i will say that the story is a bit bloated. maybe this is me being more accustomed to much more detail-sparse narratives and limited casts but there is a lot of text waxing about party positionings, various bits of military and equipment lore, and connections between

finished golden kamuy!! a really, really fun ride all around. these three ended up as my favorites and i would say their individual stories have the strongest writing (especially ogata, who's a definite standout)

His soldiers having such deep fanboyish devotion to him, a seeming audacious lunatic, that’s played for a lot of laughs slowly being revealed to be the product of one of the more disturbing depictions I’ve seen of grooming and emotional manipulation… really excellent villain writing

it’s how he is so genuinely goofy and ludicrous in his antics that it lulls you into a false sense of security so that when he reveals himself as the calculating predator that he is and the scope of control he has over the situation it hits so much harder

nah this author never asks himself if it’s wrong because he is gleefully and unapologetically indulging in the Freak Shit across the entire manga and god i love it for that
