Thanks Nate.
it's awesome! need some other states to allow for it to expand market/bring down cost.

@nateforutah.bsky.social - I assume you are already familiar with this... Do you have any other feedback/comments?
Plug-in Solar Rising

Utah passed law, exempting solar systems 1,200 watts or smaller from interconnection rules.

If 5 plus states adopt reforms, study forecasts:

Cost of plug-in solar falls to ~$0.50/watt & payback to 3-4 years.

24 million homes use it!

I think this is really important for the long run. Right now though, companies are willing to pay more than fossil cost for green power. Reputation is valuable.

In the medium term, these local-solar heat battery solutions are a form of hedging. But mostly I think companies are trying it out.

Love this concept ...

Redwood Material has built a "black box" to connect a hodgepodge of used batteries into a cheaper BESS.

Every year, the supply of used batteries will grow. Ten years from now, a big chunk of BESS projects across the US will be developed with second-life batteries.

Interesting to see that solar now shows up in second place for hourly fuel share across the US.

Currently, only a few hours a week, but let's see how this changes over the coming years.

Is this one of the most under-reported stories out there? This product looks like it is the answer to electrifying industrial heat.

Am I missing something?
Rondo Energy begins commercial operations of the world's largest industrial heat battery — 100 MWh — capable of converting low-cost electricity from wind & solar into heat at >1000°C and supply constant heating needs for industrial processes. 🔌💡

What a great project!

The #WesternGrid keeps getting cleaner.
This recent press release ticks all the boxes.

- New 50MW/200 MWh battery in Arizona
- Behind the meter!
- Helping to power a new electric arc furnace at a Nucor steel plant

Within five years, we are gonna see batteries everywhere.

You gotta love unintended consequences...
A billion dollars’ worth of aluminum cans end up in U.S. landfills every year.

With producers looking to curb their emissions and tariffs raising the price of virgin materials, that trash has never been more valuable.
Trump’s tariffs spur US aluminum industry to boost recycling
Producers were already looking to recycled aluminum to help lower carbon emissions. Now, under Trump’s trade policy, demand for scrap is even higher.

This may be true for the US, but the Western US continues to lower its fossil fuel usage at a steady pace.

The estimate for 2025 is based on the data reported thru July.

About 50-60 GWh of battery storage was added in the US over the last 18 months.

The total is now about 100 GWh. It would be nice to see this grow to 500 GWh by 2030.
As Megapacks have increased from 3.9 to 5 MWh, Megafactories manufacturing capacity has now stretch from 40 GWh/year towards 50 since the internals of the packs are the main change and they drive density gains.

I somehow missed this thread a few weeks ago.

Great concept - "Enhanced Geothermal Data Center Cluster".

Looking forward to 10 GW of development in Utah by 2035!

Next up - expansion to other Western States - especially California.

Also @jackconness.bsky.social - good follow.

Not only is Fervo demonstrating viability today, we have big plans for the future - scalable and repeatable 50 MW modules to create an Enhanced Geothermal Data Center Cluster. We are talking "spud date" to delivery in 18 months. Did I already mention zero fresh water usage?

Love this example of learning curve - products getting better AND cheaper.
Good morning with good news: Few things cost less in 2025 than in 2011, but the Nissan Leaf does.

In 2011, the Leaf cost $32,780 ($47,077 inflation adjusted) with a range of ~100 miles.

The 2026 Leaf costs $29,990 with 303 miles range!

~17K dollars less!

Not enough.

The US needs to get to 100 GW of utility-scale per year. At least.

Note: Here are recent yearly solar additions.

2023: ~ 19 GW
2024: ~ 31 GW

Battery storage is booming in the Western US - even outside of California.

- 7,200 MW of storage as of June 2025
- could have another 3,000 MW by year-end.

One of the most under-reported stories out there. The US auto industry is being left far behind.

#energysky
This is especially for those analysts who have a third-world framing of China's capacity.

Ford CEO notes that "their cost, quality of their vehicles is far superior to what I see in the West".

China is the current leader in industries of the future and US is doing everything it can to lag behind.
Ford's CEO says China's EV progress is 'the most humbling thing' he's ever seen
"We are in global competition with China, and it's not just EVs. And if we lose this, we do not have a future Ford," said Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford.
