Consciousness Is All There Is
Those who live without a spiritual center are in no position to lecture the rest of the world about happiness and fulfillment.

How can something empty convey the value of being full?

Three days before Christmas, 60 years ago, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams stood on stage for two nights and picked up their instruments to do something none of them had ever done before.

They were going to play everything wrong.

Analysis is the art of seeing what’s there and what’s missing.

What’s my next sentence going to be?

I’m a quarter through George Saunders' new novel, Vigil, which I bought based on the concept. I will finish it, but the narrative feels disjointed, like an autistic poet on their fourth coffee. I want to grab the narrator by the face with both hands and tell them sternly, “Focus on the story!”

You must learn to separate art from the maker. You will be manipulated the rest of your life like a puppet if you can’t.

Happy Birthday to the great @thornewip.bsky.social.

John is tied for my favorite podcasting partner. He and I did important work together for the appreciation and analysis ofTwin Peaks The Return.

Beyond that work, he’s just a nice person, brilliant, kind, and wise. I’m grateful to know him.

Dear JB: Can the novel ever be separated from the author?

If the reader is not an intelligent person, they will get lost in the image of the creator.

It’s the same with politicians and voting.

America was broken by the comfort of stale grievances.

If you’re not watching Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, you’re missing out. This week’s episode was a classic Trek moral storyline that emphasized the power of friendship and dignity.

I’m here for this Star Trek meets 90210 vibe this show is throwing down.

Congress controls the flow of money through the government. This was always meant to be a moral choke point when executive ambition betrayed the will the of the people.

Our will be done.

I swear I had no idea how deep and meaningful the story was that was told over five seasons of some of the best science fiction storytelling ever broadcast on television.

I’m talking about Babylon 5.

I could kick myself for not watching it 3 years ago!

I got a gold-made plate that says I wish you would.

No one is as smart as they think they are, especially if they think of themselves as smart.

If anti-AI zealots can’t explain how OpenAI, Claude, Deepseek, and Gemini differ in prompting results, ignore their tech opinions. They aren't experts.

If your life is solely organized around receiving pleasure and experiencing comfort, then you’re living it wrong and you’re going to have to live it over again.

Being “manageably uncomfortable” is the secret to growth and enlightenment.

America lost some incredible old trees this week during the huge snow and ice storm.

RIP to the trees. They are worth more to us than the politicians.

I can tell if your life is out of balance by your answer to these simple questions:

“Over a given week, how well do you sleep?”

“Do you feel rested when you wake up?”

“Do you wake up more than once during the night?”

If you don’t have a handle on your sleep, you don’t have a handle on your life.

Until I watched The Return (2017), I didn’t care much for Twin Peaks. It was an anachronistic throw back to the strange days of early 1990s commercial broadcast television, one part weird, one part quirky, and one part subtextual incest rape porn.

But Twin Peaks The Return was something more…

I wouldn’t trust Elon Musk to maintain a fresh water fish tank, let alone be responsible for interplanetary human migration.

There’s a name for writers who have capitulated to the machinery of commerce over prioritizing the dignity of self-expression.

Hacks.
