The Allegheny National Forest was established in 1923 for watershed protection purposes...
By the President of the United States of America, A Proclamation. Whereas, certain lands within the State of Pennsylvania have been or may hereafter be acquired by the United States under authority of the Act of Congress approve March first, nineteen hundred and eleven (36 Stat. 961), entitled "An Act to enable any State to cooperate with any other State or States, or with the United States, for the protection of the watersheds of navigable streams, and to appoint a commission for the acquisition of lands for the purpose of conserving the navigability of navigable rivers"; and, Whereas, it appears that the public good will be promoted by reserving and setting apart said lands as a public forest reservation, and the same have been designated by the Secretary of Agriculture as the Allegheny National Forest. Now, therefore, I, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America, by virtually of the power in me vested by section eleven of said Act and by section twenty-four of the Act of March tree, eighteen hundred and ninety one (26 Stat. 1103), entitled "An act to repeal timber culture laws and for other purposes", do proclaim that there are herby reserved and set apart as a public forest reservation all of said lands within the area shown as the Allegheny National Forest on the diagram attached hereto and made a part hereof, and that all lands, therein which have been or may hereafter by acquired by the United States for National Forest purposes shall be permanently reserved and administered as part of the Allegheny National Forest. In Witness, thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done in the City of Washington this twenty-fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord on thousand nine hundred and twenty-three, and of the independence of the United States the one hundred and forty-eighth. FORESTS ARE NOT FARMS Black Cherry is a fine tree but it made up only 0.8% of the native forest. Clearcutting, herbicides, and fertilizers have been used to farm for Black Cherry which now makes up more than 25% of the forest.

Trump wants to clearcut the Allegheny National Forest 
for "forest health". BLACK CHERRY DECLINE For 30 years the US Forest Service said they had to promote black cherry over other tree species because of health risks to those species. Black cherry only made up 0.8% of the native forest, but today makes up > 25% of the Allegheny. Now, black cherry is declining at faster rates than other tree species. 30 years of clearcutting hurt forest health. We don't need more clearcutting. AlleghenyForest.org

The only thing that guarantees sugar 
Maple decline is commercial logging. Clearcutting works against the goal of preserving forest health.

 20 Years Ago the US Forest Service approved the massive East Side Project to "improve forest health". The result? Forest health is worse off - there are more disease complexes affecting trees and more trees are dying.

for "forest health". EASTERN HEMLOCK The Woolly Adelgid is aggressively killing Eastern Hemlock. Logging does not prevent the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid from killing trees. Logging Guarantees that the trees will decline. Because they will be cut down. AlleghenyForest.org

Most of the Allegheny National Forest is managed for clearcut logging (in red). This over-emphasis on clearcutting is inconsistent with the reason the forest was created in 1923 - watershed protection!

Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest is primarily managed for clearcutting (red) with secondary considerations for forest conservation (green). Unfortunately, the US Forest Service under Trump plans to clearcut some of those green areas as well (see Upper Mill Project)!
Allegheny National Forest. Red = primary management goal is clearcutting. Green = Primary Management Goals are Conservation. Blue = Primary management Goals are Recreation. Colored National Recreation Areas Green to emphasize they are largely conserved. White areas represent state or private lands.

The Allegheny National Forest was established in 1923. President Coolidge had the choice of establishing the forest for timber production or watershed protection - he chose watershed protection.

Historically, Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest had less than 1% of black cherry in the overstory. Due to manipulative logging, herbicides, fertilizers, and fencing black cherry now makes up over 25% of the overstory and 50% of the understory.

Looking for other forest activists to connect with / follow. Worked for 15 years to protect Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest. Went dormant for a while after burnout and am riddled with chronic illness but needs must protect the forest!!
