There is a unity of message coming out of this administration. It echoes, sometimes verbatim, the messages of early 20th Century eugenics. Here is an example from a 1919 article by Prescott Hall, a leader of the immigration restriction movement, describing immigrants as a public health threat.

Hall's comments were quoted verbatim in an openly white supremacist volume of the era: The Rising Tide of Color against White World-Supremacy by Lothrop Stoddard. This book was parodied by Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. Stoddard and his ilk wrote the script you are hearing repeated today.

Davenport believed that temperament was inherited. His book The Feebly Inhibited suggested that paupers and criminals often lacked both intelligence and self control --feeblemindedness and feeble inhibitions worked hand in hand to cause social problems.

The argument that poverty and crime are caused by intellectual deficits and lack of self-control was made regularly by leaders in eugenics like Walter Fernald. This is Fernald in 1912, giving a lecture about "The Burden of Feeble-Mindedness" printed in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal.

We've been hearing such unsubstantiated claims since the 1960s. We should instead focus on how the media reports each new "discovery by scientists" as if 5+ decades of refuted claims never happened. Even Charlie Brown recognized that Lucy had fooled him before.

IQ hereditarians are in shambles right now.

The mean IQ correlation of reared-apart fraternal twins (DZAs) does not differ significantly from that of identical twins reared apart (MZAs).

Conclusion: 0% IQ heritability (no genetic influences detected). jayjoseph22.substack.com/p/iq-heredit...

Interesting passage from a 1976 chapter by Minn. Study of Twins Reared Apart leader T. Bouchard. Here, Bouchard recognized that being raised in a “less than-favorable” environment – as opposed to a favorable one – could lower a person’s expected IQ score by 24 points! www.amazon.com/Human-behavi...

Whether it was Arthur Jenson on a typewriter in 1970 or @cremieuxrecueil on a laptop in 2023, the claim that Cyril Burt's "twin data" are valid and that twins in the earlier studies were "reared apart" is a form of scientific deception.

As is typical with eugenicists, the founder of Herasight’s scholarship fails to meet reasonable standards of rigour for his discipline 👇 Academics REALLY should push back against eugenicists, not just ignore them, as philosopher Rob Wilson did in his responses to articles “defending eugenics” here
Like, “Defending eugenics” is an absolutely bonkers title for a paper and the author list is a mix of “people you’d totally expect to write this article” and “people who should know better”. Either way an actual scholar of eugenics took them to school philarchive.org/archive/WILE...
