Photographer, I take pictures of where I live & walk around a lot 📸

Dark Streets of Birmingham.

There's something special about taking photos at night. Lights glow, surfaces glitter & shadows surge ominously.
I really look forward to getting out on the streets at this time of year (continues ➡️➡️)

Austin, remains.

It's 20 years since MG Rover went under. The Longbridge factory, known locally as 'The Austin', was a vast site sprawling over Cofton Hill.
Two decades later, the Austin is mostly gone, replaced by housing & retirement duplexes. A few buildings remain here & there, if you look 👀

Autumn on Clent (with my ridiculous lens) 😋

The Clent Hills in Autumn is a magical place for a walk. The rolling landscape, gorgeous leaf colours & glorious light all combine to soothe the soul.
I'm fortunate to have a daughter who's happy to indulge my love for walking... continues ➡️➡️➡️

Parked on Campus.

On my way home last night I spotted this snazzy little motor (with uber-cool pop up lights) parked up on Campus. No idea what the car is (if you do, let me know in the comments) but I'm pretty chuffed with how the black & white edit turned out 🤩

Soulful Glass

Cleaning my camera lenses revealed an intriguing fact. Most of my lenses are analogue, manually focused glass.
Analogue lenses don't have that clinical sharpness that's typical of autofocus glass. I guess I prefer images to be softer, more soulfully rendered 🙂

Brum Illuminations.

Yesterday I met up for a long overdue catchup with some photography friends. The prevailing rain forced us to seek shelter & coffee ☕️ But we were soon lured back out by the dazzling autumn sunlight.

Photographers often get misty eyed talking about 'the light' (continues ➡️)

London in the rain.

Went to London with the most excellent @yo.nayson yesterday. It rained. A lot!

Despite this, we had a bostin time snapping around. In camera I used Lumix's Leica-inspired black & white film sim. The images are gritty but rather reflect the inclement conditions!

Villa winning away at Spursy, how good does that feel? Two brilliant goals and a team playing with intelligence, grit and even a little bit of swagger towards the end. Fabulous performance from Unai Emery's Lions and so pleased for Emi Buendia.

Birmingham Fog

A quartet of images from an amble about the city yesterday morning. As per usual, I lost myself in the fog 🤩

Tunnel Visions.

One of my many little obsessions is tunnels & pedestrian underpasses. There's a lot of them in Brum, so many in fact that I once spent a year documenting all that remain from the 1960s. Later on, I was lucky enough to have this project published 🤩.

My Ridiculous lens (ii)

My new/used 250mm f5.6 mirror reflex lens is ridiculous. It's difficult to compose & focus accurately; contrast is low & details are often mushy.
And yet.
This lens is extraordinary. The images it makes walk a thin line between artfulness & insanity.
I love it dearly 🤩

My Ridiculous lens.

I recently bought a very odd lens. It's a manual focus 250mm f5.6 reflex lens.
Once I figured out how to reliably compose & focus this beast, the out of focus areas sang & danced like crazy. Sharpness is soft & it's not great quality.

And yet, for all its faults, I love it! 🤩

St Anne's Kite Fest

A cracking day out at the St Anne's Kite Festival. The Fylde coast has been wet & windy of late, but the Sky Gods must have been feeling benevolent because the sun came out for the kite flyers. As did much of Lancashire as families flocked to the beach ⛱️

Glut

Whilst catching up on some gardening jobs I noticed our pear tree (a £1 Aldi bargain bin buy from years ago) had a few pears on it...

13 kilos (28 lbs) worth in fact 😬

So, the question is, WTAF to do with this weighty bounty?!? We have similar glut of plums & apples! Anyone for chutney?

Xpan-imental

I recently discovered that my camera has the ability to shoot in 65x24, the so-called Xpan panoramic mode.

The visual constraints of this crop, wide & narrow, are really interesting. Its limited yet oddly liberating format really inspires creative compositions 🙂📸

Street impressions.

Ernst Haas once said, "You see what you think, you see what you feel, you are what you see."

I love impressionist art, influencing my photography over the years. Making images of street scenes through vinyl curtains is a lovely way of rendering my impressionist eye 👀🙂

Duddeston massive.

A gloomy morning walk around Duddeston today to see the new viaduct being constructed there for HS2. Dubbed 'Bellingham Bridge' the part-built viaduct looms over houses & factories like a massive lego set.

Finding a flock of dead taxis nearby was a neat photographic bonus! 📸

Birmingham Abstracts

"Suki koso mono no jouzu nare" is a simple Japanese philosophy that translates as "If you like it, you will do it well." It's an idea that resonates with me.

I genuinely enjoy finding & making abstract images. I'll keep plugging away, making more images & making them well 📸🙂

Jesus in a Taxi-van, and other stories.

I totally get why photographers travel far & wide in search of decisive moments. A change of scenery always helps to spark creativity.
That said, I adore walking the streets of Birmingham, week in week out, capturing moments from the place I call Home 🙂

Worcestershire Sauce

Day out in Worcester yesterday. Despite the heat, the town had a lovely, relaxed vibe with lots of arcades and walkways for a photographer like me to lose myself in. Along the way, I met some lovely people, and hopefully, I'll be back in the not to distant future 📸

Don't look at me, I'm too shy!

It's been a weird few days. A nasty allergic reaction left me feeling dreadful. I've had no choice but to rest & go easy. I'm deeply indebted to my wife Sue for her support throughout, and my furry companion Bella, whose demeanour kinda sums things up 🥺😻

Creativity & adversity.

Life has been crap of late.
In response, the urge to make images has risen like an irresistible tide inside me.
It reminds me of Bukowski's poem, that we make our best work not when things are great, but when times are tough.
I guess it's my way of dealing with it all 📸

Scenes from around the Rezza 📸

I've had a bit of a weird week; a late night health alert saw me in hospital on Tuesday. I'm fine now, at home, recuperating.

Anyway, here's some pix from a walkabout before I got ill, taken around Edgbaston Reservoir in the sunshine 🌞
