Injecting some joy in the skyline - today was my first day as an assistant professor! 😊
Hello world! Today’s officially the first day of the lab! It’s an empty space currently only filled with ideas (that I don’t have card access to yet 😂) but I’m excited for the science that will happen here! -JCG

Re-upping this one
I will succeed despite and in spite of this.
The NIH Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) K99/R00 Award updated its end date to today, according to grants.gov (search for “MOSAIC” in the keywords)

Have any K99/R00 Fellows heard anything??? Is this just until Monday?

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last.

Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

It takes only a minute or two to fill out.

You don’t need to be an academic to support #Science!

Darby makes this point but I just want to reinforce it: These words are entirely legitimate to discuss science, accurately and correctly. This attack on "DEI" (🙄) is not only an attempt to resegregate science but also an attack on expertise, itself.

Resisting it is a defense of science
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

we don't *want* them to be efficient at identifying those categories. it should be an enormous pain in the ass that they have to fight through for every single grant to determine if it's the DEIA use of the word or not.

because they're hoping you'll ditch those of us in groups 1 and 2 if it's easy.

This #BlackHistoryMonth, the new administration is attempting to bury this important month of reflection. People have been asking what they can do. Just like in 2020, educate yourself, this time centering Black voices (I better not see a book about Black exclusion written by a wyt person trending).

My challenge to academics this #BlackHistoryMonth: find out what the relationship is between your campus and Black people. When was your campus started? When was the first Black student accepted? Are there programs that still haven't graduated Black students, and if so, why?

This is not business as usual.

It’s not just a change in funding priorities going forward; it is the reneging on funding agreements and is profoundly disruptive for even those grants that will be found to be compliant.

Meanwhile, trainees who often live paycheck to paycheck are going unpaid.

All of this is reminding me of when I was on a panel at the 2023 San Diego Comic Con. The panel was titled “Dr. Evil: Scientists as Supervillains” and one of the questions we were asked was what would be our villain origin story.

I didn’t really have an answer back then but I do now.
