This seems like the sort of thing Douglas Adams was born for, if only someone had suggested it.
A thing that I don't think exists in the world but should is a crossover between Peter Davison's incarnation of Doctor Who and P.G.Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster titled "Dreadful Bother of the Cybermen -or- What Ho, Dalek!"

Today I learned why leaves change color in the fall. Some nice turns of phrase in this piece, too!

The magical chemistry behind nature’s fall foliage colors - AgriLife Today
When summer fades and fall emerges, lush green tree leaves give way to a variety of warm hues in foliage that mark the changing of seasons.

I agree with everything in this thread, but also: people believe these false claims. Disinformation serves not only to state what “feels true” but to persuade the uninformed. It is still crucial to get the truth out there.
Such a characteristic dynamic, righties saying the protests were "funded by Soros" and lefties responding with fact checks & empirical observations. Ships passing in the night.

What the righties want to say is: the left is fundamentally illegitimate. That, to them, is the core truth.

Watching recent @markhamillofficial.bsky.social interviews, I’m struck by the incomprehensible fact that he hasn’t written an autobiography yet! Talk about an immediate bestseller!

I already didn’t like where this was going, but I really don’t like where this is going.
Huh. I don't remember the federal government asking me what flavor of "white" I am before. This list of what are I think meant to be ethnicities also seems really arbitrary, and doesn't map out onto ethnicities per se. (This is for an NSF annual personnel report for a graduate training program.)

When I first learned that Joe Rogan had Atlantis-promoting guests on his program, I was just amused. But as I looked more into Graham Hancock's work, it came to seem like a useful case study of how skepticism can be a rejection of the scientific method.

Pseudo-Archaeology, UFOs, and the Need for Authentic Skepticism
To distinguish the truth from bullshit, rational skepticism is required. This is not the same as contrarianism, conspiracy theories, or a blanket refusal to accept any and all sources of authority and...

Long threads are hard to follow, but I think I got through it all, and I would really like to read the comics from this alternate timeline. In particular, I want to see this take on Superman’s supporting cast.
In my complex mental construction (total fantasy) of how this could work, I'd try to retain Al Milgrom as editor, to handle the line. I'd try to steal a young Keith Pollard from Marvel before he really got going there, and have SUPERMAN by done by Michelinie, Pollard and Layton, presenting a...

Am I crazy, or was it until recently the case that you could subscribe to a Substack without getting email? But lately, the floodgates have opened, and the only option is to unsubscribe. I believe this is what @edzitron.com calls “the rot economy”—products made less useful to drive engagement.

Doing some research, I came across this fascinating article about the life of Eugene Bullard, and I can't believe Hollywood hasn't done anything with his amazing story. He was an athlete, musician, fighter pilot, civil rights activist, and so much more.

Apple person #1: How will we get users to try out our newest useless feature?
Apple person #2: Turn it on by default and make them hunt for how to turn it off. Really bury it in a submenu.

In case this has also been driving you insane lately, if you're on a Mac, upgraded to Sequoia, and your windows keep automatically resizing:

1) Go to "System Settings"
2) Scroll to "Desktop & Dock"
3) Find the "Windows" section
4) There are four windows tiling options, disable them all

Another NYE in front of the TV, another year of being vaguely shocked at how terrible the live broadcasts are once the East Coast hosts sign off. The other time zones are clearly an afterthought.

On the other hand, we didn’t tune in until 11:50 CT. Maybe they were equally terrible the whole time.

I’m glad to hear the John Williams Superman theme in the new teaser—if you have an iconic all-timer, why wouldn’t you use it? (See also: Monty Norman’s James Bond theme)—but is there a name for these extra-dramatic, drum-heavy versions of themes for trailers, e.g., the Star Wars sequels?

Wow, this week’s episode of #ThePenguin was over-the-top cartoonish. For some reason, the idea of a mental institution seems to bring out TV producers’ (and actors’) worst, most clichéd instincts. It would be funny if it didn’t perpetuate age-old stereotypes about mental illness.

If there’s an afterlife, one the thing I hope for is that the forgotten authors of classic schoolyard poetry like “sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G” are recognized and properly celebrated for their immortal works.
