I don't mind the companies at the forefront profiting from their efforts, but hopefully the best software development tools aren't locked behind a paywall, especially since our data was used to train these things.

I want this next generation of software development tools to run on my own computer. Vim and Emacs helped democratize software development and made it accessible. We shouldn't allow this AI wave to take us backwards.

I really hope the open source community can keep pace.

My retirement plan is to take all the easyish games that have adverts/interstitials, things like sudoku games, candycrush clones, and vibe code opensource free versions of them without adverts

okay after a good sleep I think i might spend my sunday on my S3 compatible scalable object storage project instead for now but I'm definitely wondering where the missing piece is for publishers with the existing alternatives to substack

is it features? feel? or really just marketing?

Jack writes for Horrible Histories according to their bio... One for the l first things you learn in history is to check your sources (primary, secondary and tertiary).

It's kinda insane to write for history books and not know to check your sources.
ah, didn't realise the context for this tweet was to a fan which, to be fair, makes it more explicable. of all the horrible things JK has ever done, and there are many, this is on the "just a bit silly" side of the scale. still cringe but not quite as bad as I thought it was

I'm dealing with an almost 4k long spec file, and VSCode had given up on the code folding, switched to Zed... omg so much easier to deal with, code folding now works as i expect

If you're still using the Serverless Framework and you're generation OpenAPI Documents form it, then you should also start creating Arazzo Workflows so you can test your API's.

Now you can with my new plugin: www.npmjs.com/package/serv...

Anyone who has the Uber app installed on their android device, should probably take a look at this: donotnotify.com. How many apps spam you with nonsense notifications you don't care about. Do wish it was opensource though.
DoNotNotify — Regain Your Focus
DoNotNotify is an advanced notification manager for Android. Block unwanted distractions with powerful filters while keeping your data 100% private.

I will reiterate that if you are an independent journo/hobbyist I will happily set up your ghost install and host it for a few quid above cost price.

You set up your own stripe and mailgun accounts, and you get to keep ALL your revenue.

And post migration from wordpress/substack is pretty easy.
If there is one resolution I want for journalists this year: it is to get off S*bstack and use Ghost or any other indy publishing platform that does not fund literal nazis instead.

Watching your parents streaming service at Christmas really drills home age for you.

At home I get the just for men adverts, whilst at my parents I'm getting adverts for incontinence pants.

It's nearly the end of 2025. Are you still using the Serverless Framework? What are your plans to migrate off of it if you're not planning to pay for v4?

Welcome To Decline. I constructed a historical dataset of economic growth in "The North" and "The South" of Britain and used it to show that Thatcher DID put The South on a course for convergence with the USA. 👍 And put The North on the opposite path. 👎 tomforth.co.uk/welcometodec...
Welcome to Decline.
The North has been declining since Thatcher. The South since Blair. It's good to be back together again I suppose.

At this time of year (a) I want a notarised statement from 1991 to say that I loved port and cheese as a teenager before I became an ancient Oxford prof; and (b) I'm annoyed that delicious port obligatorily contains the drug alcohol. It's like if all hobknobs were laced with ketamine.
