It didn't go quite as expected, which made Day 1 of men's hockey at #MilanoCortina2026 quite entertaining.

In the end though, it might be remembered as Juraj Slafkovský's latest Olympic moment.

My recap:
2026 Winter Olympics: Juraj Slafkovský has a new Olympic moment
The men’s tournament got underway on Wednesday, with two games that were very different than many expected heading into the day.

Juraj Slafkovský now has nine goals in eight career Olympic games.

Seven of those games were played as a 17 year old. One against NHLers.

Finland's assistant is Mikko Manner, who I could only assume is Finnish Mitch Marner

Juraj Slafkovský now has eight career Olympic goals. No other NHLer at this tournament has more than four.

Oh my Juraj Slafkovský. What a goal.

Juraj Slafkovský on Slovakia's top line with Adam Ruzicka and Tomas Tatar.

Oliver Kapanen is a healthy scratch for Finland.

Sarah Fillier was the 9th in Canada’s forward time on ice. Blayne Turnbull led the team. Jocelyne Larocque played 21 minutes. Claire Thompson played 14. They were trailing like 55 minutes.

Not a serious effort at all.

They were trying to lose 2-0 and even failed at that.

If Canada wanted to send a message without their captain, what happened on Tuesday certainly wasn’t the one they wanted.

2026 Winter Olympics: USA makes a statement in rout vs. Canada
Canada won the game, setting up a first-place showdown with the United States, but their captain fell in the loss to the Czechs.

Canada was always going to be in trouble in this quad because the next generation lost so much ice time to COVID, but Hockey Canada surely didn't help with their decisions throughout.
Number of players on other teams who are younger than Canada's youngest skater (Jennifer Gardiner):

USA: 9
Czechia: 11
Finland: 9
Switzerland: 12
Sweden: 11
Japan: 11
Germany: 10
Italy: 9
France: 12

I have no idea how that goal counts... Literally no idea.

Canada wasn't winning this game anyway, but... what...

Hockey Canada confirms that Marie-Philip Poulin has been ruled out of today's game against the United States. #MilanoCortina2026

We don’t know the severity of Marie-Philip Poulin’s injury and that uncertainty is the hardest part. On the injury and all the women’s hockey action yesterday #MilanoCortina2026

Joke’s on him. The Stanley Cup hasn’t been won by a Canadian team for over 30 years.
Trump, in the middle of his latest unhinged Truth Social screed, claims that if Canada makes a trade deal with China, "the first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup."

Natálie Mlýnková scored again. Her third of the tournament. But she falls on Erin Ambrose’s leg and she leaves the game immediately.

Not great news for Canada or the Victoire.

Marie-Philip Poulin official ruled out for the rest of the game vs Czechia with a right leg injury. She left the game in the first period.

Canada plays the USA tomorrow.

Kaltounkova with her second hit to the head of the period. First Poulin, now Fillier. Blatant and the referees aren’t calling it.

Marie-Philip Poulin goes to the room with what seems like a left leg (knee?) injury. Not great news for Canada or the Victoire. #MilanoCortina2026
February 9, 2026 at 8:31 PM
Really not sure how that wasn’t a major on the hit to Poulin. Was clearly to the head.

Good for Kristin O’Neill, who watched the entire 2022 Olympics from the stands as part of the taxi squad and now has her first Olympic goal.

I fully admit I did not understand most of what was said but couldn’t and didn’t want to look away. That’s an entertainer. That’s why he was there.
