Huge thanks to @mikehoney.bsky.social for all the valuable COVID data he tracks. His work has become incredibly important for scientists and health professionals, and with so little data available now, it really matters for people who want to stay safe and informed.

“School lockdowns”

What ridiculous terminology.

It’s wrong for a start. No one is locked in the school for disease control. The kids and staff are off site.

It’s “remote learning” or “working from home”.

For most kids and teachers, it’s not a horrifying jail sentence.

This is a very important point. Too much thinking about infectious disease in binary terms (contagious or completely safe; totally immune or not at all; ...). We know that the amount of virus inhaled also matters.

Similarly for indoor public spaces, especially if you plan to be in a very small, underventilated space for a long time (e.g. train trip). If unmasked, you'll continue to exhale viral particles which will remain suspended in the air and viable for some time. Even after you've got off the train. 2/

Should you wear a mask if you've got symptomatic flu? YES. If you wear it at home *from the onset of your symptoms*, your family members are much less likely to catch flu from you (but you must avoid unmasked co-sleeping and eating around same table - have your meals alone). 1/

The truth. Children did not die as frequently as older adults and people with comorbidities.

The misinformation. That it is “mild”, indicating that infections are unlikely to be consequential.

The lie. Children don’t get infected and don’t transmit disease.
Oh. I thought children were somehow impacted differently during the pandemic. Was that mis/disinformation?

My definition of mild.

Controlled by simple analgesia and did not need to see doctor. Symptoms resolved and did not lead to chronic and debilitating health issues.

COVID IS NOT MILD FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.

I will continue to wear my N95 mask whenever and wherever I feel it's appropriate, both for my protection and for the protection of others.
And if others wear any kind of protective face mask, or hijab, or whatever, it's their business and no one else's.

When you're chronically ill, your baseline means everything.

I have very little function, but what I do have I'm desperate to keep. Non disabled people struggle to understand how easily setbacks can happen, as well as how hard it is to regain what we've lost.
Maintaining a Baseline Means Everything When You're Chronically Ill
So why is it so hard to do? And how can we make it a bit easier?

Global measles outbreak hits Australia

“Aus has already recorded 52 measles cases for 2025, incl 20 in NSW, 14 in Vic, 13 in WA

That's compared to 57 for all of last year & just 26 in 2023”

Reminder: measles is airborne; clean air & masks as well as 💉

How worried should Australia be about a measles outbreak?
Australia is in the middle of a surge in measles cases amid a global spike and declining childhood vaccination rates. So what precautions should be taken to avoid widespread transmission?
