Four fascinating pictures by Isaac Mendes Belisario dating from c1840 showing Kelly’s vast plantation. Edmond Kelly of Lisduff Galway was attorney general 1720s & 1740s his son Denis was chief justice w/ an estate of 20,000 acres & 360 enslaved people. His dau Elizabeth married Westport Brownes.

Visited St Katherine’s church in Spanish town/St Jago de La Vega where William O’Brien earl of Inchiquin was buried in 1692. As governor of Jamaica he lived in the town & lorded it 717 grandees, 10% of Irish extraction. His will is in Island Record Office - he died a v wealthy man.

A fascinating few days working on the 17C wills in Jamaican archives. Found lots of Irish women & men -Archdeckanes, Butlers, Burkes, Connollys, Dalys, Devereux, Dillons, Dohertys, Donovans, Fitzgeralds, Fitzpatricks, Fitzwilliam, Frenchs, Kellys, Kennedys, Kirwans, etc etc @voicestcd.bsky.social
