Ambassador de Burca got the ‘Turns of the Centuries’ conference at UNAM in Mexico City off to a great start as he overviews the many historical & literary connections between Ireland & Latin America. Then Clare Connolly gives a cracking keynote on the writing of Irish women.🇮🇪 🇲🇽

The National Museum of the American Indian esp the gallery on Treaties - later “bad paper” - tells an extraordinary story of conquest, expropriation & assimilation (aka ‘civilisation’).
Sound familiar?
Also noteworthy that Andrew Jackson’s parents were “Ulster Scots” who left Ireland in 1765.

Found the battlefield sites at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville & Bull Run to be very moving. Men from Ireland served on both sides & 1000s died or were wounded. ☘️

Great exhibits on women at the Jamestown museum in Virginia. Of the 900 colonists in 1620 census 200 were women & children. With time the number increased.

The National park at Appomattox Virginia - where the American civil war finally ended - is incredibly well done. So enjoyed our time there.

Inspiring doesn’t begin to capture just how amazing the national museum of African American history & culture is. I loved everything about it esp the coverage afforded to women. Lonnie Bunch was the creative genius & it was my pleasure to welcome him to @tlrhub.bsky.social

On 12/22 July 1691 the battle of Aughrim was fought resulting in the defeat of the Jacobite forces by the Williamites. One of the bloodiest battles on Irish soil w 7000 being killed.
Also took the opportunity to visit the well preserved castle & the impressive Dominican priory at Athenry.

I am reviewing Reforming Galway, the last wonderful book by the late Raymond Gillespie. I was thrilled to visit St Nicholas church to see it, esp the font & the only cherub to escape Cromwellian iconoclasm. The memorial to Jane Eyre is also fascinating for our @voicestcd.bsky.social

Tipu Sultan’s summer palace at Srirangaptna near Maysore has the most remarkable wall murals showing defeat of clean shaven troops from East India Co (in red) vs Tippu’s men & French (in red & facial hair). Tippu (w/ rose) & Count Lally from Galway w/ telescope. Amazing 🤩 🇮🇪🇮🇳
