Celebrating National Lego Day

I hope there's an International Lego Day too, but here in the U.S., it's time to celebrate one of the best, most creative toys ever invented, the Lego brick. The toy was invented by a company in Denmark in 1949 and has been going strong ever since. So why talk about…
Celebrating National Lego Day
I hope there's an International Lego Day too, but here in the U.S., it's time to celebrate one of the best, most creative toys ever invented, the Lego brick. The toy was invented by a company in Denmark in 1949 and has been going strong ever since. So why talk about it in this blog dedicated to speculative fiction? I think of "speculative fiction" in the broad sense, not the narrow sense.

What a pack of lies out of Noem’s mouth today as she responded to the ICE killing in Minneapolis. Lies about our mayor, our governor, our city, our state, my neighborhood. Don’t believe her lies about us.

Jubjub’s favorite movie, Flow. Not lying—he watched almost the whole thing with us, often right up on top of the screen, sometimes from further back. He really relates to it. Not normal cat behavior.

Interesting —FBI takes ICE shooting case and (Associated Press reports) now evidence is unavailable to state law enforcement. Anyone else smell a rat?

How tragic (or darkly comic) is it that in a direct through-line from Ronald Reagan on down a sniveling self-serving misogynist racist line to Mitch McConnell & Citizens United we get this monstrous pustule on the nation’s body?

In whatever form you celebrate, or by whatever name, I hope yours is a happy one. I had fun finding all the quotations from great speculative fiction for my "advent" calendar. Now I realize, though, that I picked them all willy-nilly, no rhyme or reason, so I left out many fantastic books I wish I had included. Next year! Meanwhile, as my gift to you:

Russell Hoban's eccentric masterpiece, Riddley Walker, was published in 1980. Push past the weird spellings. Read it aloud to yourself if you have to. A must-read. Find out more HERE

Kim Stanley Robinson published The Ministry for the Future in 2020, a cautionary tale for our planet on the brink. The book is chilling and in my opinion necessary. The novel is one among many, and one of the best, in Robinson's prolific career. Find out more HERE. I should also point you to a great review of Icehinge, one of Robinson's other novels, recently posted HERE.

Just when I think I’ve gotten so used to Trump’s over-capitalizations in every puerile thing he writes, here comes another that annoys me all over again. Stuff that stabs you in the eye with every. single. word. I suppose that’s the intent. . .
