This Seattle baker is using his passion for pastries to help immigrants
Since immigrating to Seattle from Mexico 14 years ago, Carlos Leon says he's built a community from scratch — built on a shared love of baking.

My editor: "I've never published a more important essay." 🥹
These Stories Teach Us How to Fight - Uncanny Magazine
Chicago, October 2025. I need you to know we tried. I bought whistles and saline eyewash for my friends, students. The theatre bought 150 whistles. They were gone in days. A neighbor 3D-printed hundre...

7. Excellent shorter fiction. In addition to the above, some of my favorite books this year were novellas. Audition for the Fox, Cinder House, Automatic Noodle, What Stalks the Deep, The Summer War, The River Has Roots. All absolutely fantastic.

6. Getting to hear @nghivo.bsky.social speak about Don't Sleep With the Dead (the book is also a joy) on her book tour. She warned us she would just start listing animal facts if no one asked questions. It was an amazing tactic for getting an audience to get over the fear of asking something dumb.

Defiant Jazz and the Department of Choreography and Merriment. Watched Severance while we had Apple TV and while the show is bananas, I enjoyed both Mr. Milchuck music sequences immensely.

3. Murderbot TV show! It was wonderful to see them strike so many of the right comedic notes. Also, the delightfully cringe wardrobe for every Preservation character.

4. Ticket to Ride. @charleskorb.bsky.social and I played this probably more than any other game this year across iterations.

Starting a thread of things that brought me nerdy joy in 2025, inspired by the great list at Reactor.

1. Introducing my kid to nerdy things! He went to his first comicon this year (dresses as Green Goblin) and we showed him Star Wars for the first time.

2. Going to my first Worldcon!

I've absolutely thought about this story at least once a week all year given all the Ozempic talk this year.

Listening to the Kexp top albums of the year countdown. So grateful for the 3 new albums I couldn't stop listening to this year:
Billboard Heart by Deep Sea Diver,
All That Is Over by Sprints, and
Everybody Scream by Florence + the Machine.

Logan with your claws so bright
Won't you help me fight Magneto tonight?

Then the X-Men won the battle
And they shouted out yippee,
Then they all got on the Blackbird
And partied hard as could be!

Wolverine the Grumpy X-Man
Had some very shiny claws
And if you ever sass him
He might just cut off your jaws

All of the other X-Men
Used to say 'hey Logan, what's your deal?'
He never wanted to be an X-Man
It didn't have any appeal

Then one big, big battle day
Professor X came to say

Today has been tough, so here for the record are the lyrics of the "X-Men song" I sing my son.

To the tune of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

You know Jean Grey, and Cyclops, and Storm, and Rogue.
You know Gambit, and Iceman, and Beast, and Toad.
But do you recall...

SEATTLE!!!

We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

In new albums by Florence + the Machine and Lily Allen we see two different reflections of feminine rage in the year 2025 and how the Trump era is convincing women playing by the rules no longer serves them. In this essay I will.....
