So "no childless cat ladies" turned into "no teachers without biological children" which would eventually be "give birth and we'll let you vote."
My grandmother got fired from being a teacher when she had my mother. American teachers weren't *allowed* to have children for most of the history of the profession.

What unfortunately happens is that when there is a downturn in enrollment, the schools are closed and the buildings sold. Then enrollments rise again and the town is screwed because there is no open land suitable to build a new school.
As more families opt for charter and private schools or homeschooling in the wake of the pandemic, cities around the country are shuttering schools. The effects fall hardest on majority-Black schools and special-needs students.
