"I was told you're a monster," the hero said.

"So they say," said the monster.

"But you're beautiful!"

"Thank you."

"Have you always been a monster?"

"Heh. I was a young maiden. But I did something forbidden."

"And became a monster?"

"Got named a monster."

"What did you do?"

"I hit back."

We've quite a few dog walkers in our neighborhood. Just now a gent came by a well-groomed terrier. Said gent was wearing a fedora & trim-fitting, hip-length suede jacket. Both looking rather dashing I have to say.

While I'm a big fan of Dorothy Sayers, there are aspects of her detective novels that have always bugged me. The o-uncle-newt Tumblr writer has a splendid essay on this re: GAUDY NIGHT: "Sayers and the nonsense of the 'proper job' (with some defense of Annie."

Oooh, loving the concept behind this one: 'soul gardens.' Sounds like a kind of emotional synaesthesia. I am most curious. Going to order post haste!

Not gonna link the thread, because it's embarrassingly flattering, but specifics of it have led to thoughts.

I absolutely believe that things come out "around the words" in your writing. Tiny details of word choice convey things.

Nobody's perfect, but at least Finkelstein is a real one.
Harvard professor Robert Trivers tried to get Jeffrey Epstein in touch with Norman Finkelstein. Instead of accepting, Norman sent a reply calling Alan Dershowitz a pedophile rapist and saying Trivers should be ashamed for defending them, and both should be strangled instead

no better summation of America's unrepentant rape culture than that one of the biggest stories of the last decade is about the abuse of women and girls and every single stakeholder working on it couldn't give less of a shit about the actual victims of the story

Besides looking to be intensely interesting for itself, this article by Antonio Melechi is a great resource for writers of fiction (literary & genre).

Sleep paralysis, somnambulism, hypnic jerks: we’ve all drifted through the borderlands of sleep & wakefulness. Those borderlands have preoccupied philosophers, scientists, & novelists, from Montaigne’s “most profound and maddest fancies” to E.M. Cioran’s warning of sleep’s “frightening importance.”
Daydreamers and Sleepwalkers: Crossing the Borderlands of the Unconscious
Scientists and philosophers have spent centuries studying sleep. Each descent only deepens the mystery.

This IG post (Acct: "herstory_feminism") about the Maltida Effect gave me a perfect plot shift for Bk 4 of my WIP academic mystery series. (Bk 1 comes out this spring so I have time to reconfigure my Bk 4 outline!).

I finally got around to watching Arwen Curry's splendid documentary on American author Ursula K. Le Guin. What a delight! Many segments of her speaking thoughtfully in that amusing and direct way she had. Recommended!
