Seeing interesting convos here on how a book *should always* have an audio version. Bleems ago, when I worked at a print-only bookstore, younger customers often asked where the VHS versions of our books were. It's a matter of what the tech expectations of the time are.

This makes absolute intuitive sense.
This brief and trenchant opinion piece by Claudio Nastruzzi describes the lexical and intellectual flattening resulting from applying LLM tools to prose, due to their tendency to return everything to the statistical mean of their training data.

Holy moly, some folks do get their undies in a bundle when someone enjoys a genre they dislike.

Books are inefficient? WTF already! Not every action has to save time. 😡

“Here’s a thought many of us have these days: if only we weren’t on our damn phones all the time, we would surely unlock a better self—one that went on hikes and talked more with our children and felt less rank jealousy about other people’s successes.”

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

“Do you know how to read?”
“No. It is one of the black arts.”
He nodded. “But a useful one,” he said.

This was on my side of our dining table this morning! NYT crossword puzzle, Lindor chocolates, & fave mug awaiting tea. I'm a lucky human. 🥰

Alas, we had to DNF the Netflix SEVEN DIALS mini-series after 1 ep. One of Agatha Christie's lesser works, which showed. Pretty visuals but the acting was stolid, the script banal, & the pacing glacial. Helena Bonham-Carter phoned it in & ingenue Mia McKenna-Bruce stared at it all precociously.

Loving color commentator AJ & studio analyst Angela's takes on the current USA v Italy ice hockey game. They're both past hockey Olympians & gold medalists...of course they're good! 🏒🥅

In that same bookstore dream (prev post), one of the booksellers wore rusty brown workman's cargo pants & a WWI-style white linen Armistice Day blouse. She had this wonderful chippy & chirpy manner...perfect for a Bk 2 (WIP) character. #AmWriting

Dreamt I visited the bookstore I used to work for bleems ago. Instead of the mall-hole-in-the-wall, it was now a thing of grand glass windows & birchwood walls. The booksellers were all young & enthusiastic. There was a little corner shelf of used books too. What a lovely way to wake up. 🌞

Ha! KJ got the same scam email (I’m assuming, no email included in post) but is on deadline so did a deep dive into it (like ya do) and found a scary but complex AI mess. Thread:
The website looks completely plausible at first glance. It's got publishing news, reviews, craft pieces, interviews, plus clickable Amazon and Goodreads links on the reviews. Proper stuff, right?

IT IS ALL FAKE.

📢 Thread!
The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1
