In prep for the Oscars this weekend, everybody should read this excellent piece by my dear friend and colleague, @ffreff.bsky.social Frederico Freitas. It's about the film I'm Still Here, his family's search for answers, and Brazil's ongoing memory wars.

Remembering Is Not Enough - Dissent Magazine
I'm Still Here defies the far right's attempts to redeem Brazil's military dictatorship. But it suggests a tidier closure to the regime's disappearances than many real families have experienced.

Feeling 🥳🙃😍 to have a blurb from novelist Yara Rodrigues Fowler.

Given how much I want Searching for Memory to be about the importance and complexities of narrative, a blurb from such a gifted storyteller like Yara means the world to me.

(been saying it to anyone who will listen) Watch this film. An extended musical riff around the story of the murder of Lumumba: on decolozination, neocolonialism, the UN, Third Worldism, CIA, jazz and so much more. Incredibly inventive formally and so powerful. Was left stunned at the end of it!

I'm an historian of Latin America, mostly social movements, memory, and development studies. My newest book (forthcoming this spring) is a biography of Aluízio Palmar, a former political prison in Brazil who became a human rights activist. It's about his life, but also how he has narrated his life.

To the small number of friends I already have on this site, I'll be moving here permanently soon!

I do think there was a golden age of Twitter, which was great for following politics and building academic networks. Sad that it ended a long time ago. Finally moving on.
