Delighted the new year brings (at last!) vol. 53 of Shakespeare Studies to the world, in all its purple-edged glory: Marlowe stars in the Forum, & the NGP, Articles & Reviews all full of wit & wisdom. Congratulations to Jim Siemon for 11 years of leadership, w/ huge gratitude for our collaboration!

Excellent and empoweringe educacioun will nevir be "efficient" yn the waye that a businesse doth stryve to be "efficient." It ys the heighte of knavery to use one standarde to measure everye human activitye. Businesses are ther to make profits. Educacioun ys ther to make the future.

This *is* why Bluesky exists, isn’t it? So clear now you say it, but I’d just never thought. (Have a happy New Year, Tracey… x)

Hmmm… ‘To a sophisticated Italian who travelled to England in the late sixteenth century, the island might not have appeared, as it had to the ancient Roman poet Virgil, “wholly separated from all the world”’. Perhaps the Italian had heard of Scotland? 🙄 #openingline

Does anyone on here know about research being done on Winifred Holtby? I’d really appreciate names, if so…

The English Faculty mourns the death of John Carey, Merton Professor from 1975 to 2002, undoubtedly the man with whom the title of Merton Professor of English Literature will remain indelibly associated in the public mind.

Just adding some rural calm into the political soup that is my timeline… A lovely afternoon walk in this little corner of Oxfordshire today. (Not sure what breed of sheep they are but they were very friendly!)

I have a brief review in this week's @thetls.bsky.social of a novel by Nicol Hochholczerová, This Room Is Difficult to Eat. For reasons into the which I will not go, it was difficult for me to read -- but I'm glad I did.

This is why, despite any quibbles I may sometimes have with it and the shameful treatment of Carole Cadwalladr, I still read The Guardian…

The most amazing building! And next door to where I work. My first peek today - can’t wait for the theatre and concert hall to open in the New Year. I’ll miss the old English Faculty - but this is a whole new direction for the Humanities to collaborate. Academically and creatively. #SchwarzmanCentre

I’d be really interested too in seeing comparable stats for other Russell Group unis… It’s a bigger problem in society (and I agree it *is* a problem) than just Ox and Cam.
