The message was so ubiquitous in my (All Black Everything) world as a child, coupled with James Brown's Say It Loud message that it never ever occurred to me that I wasn't somebody. And never occurred not to be proud of Blackness.

It was a very lovely and Black space to exist in.
“I am somebody” shaped how millions of us saw ourselves as kids, including me. That message mattered. It still does.
