The UK-Africa boxing experiment has been a disaster. It smells of colonialism, or at bet, a cynical cash-grab without having to invest in UK fighters. But, it points to the desperation these promoters have to make money at all costs

Thank you, Jack. You've made some of the best episodes of the podcast this year and they've prompted me to reconsider Amis. Particularly enjoyed the episodes with Geoff Dyer, Ian McGuire and John McAuliffe, and Vincenzo Barney. Looking forward to many more episodes in 2026. Merry Christmas! 🎄🥂

The tensile poise it takes to write a life the way Szalay does in Flesh is the literary equivalent of performing a perfect iron cross. Just know that the author allows no friction between you and the story. Once you make contact, that’s it, you’re gone. A masterful work.

We’re now approaching the second 1/2 of the 2020s, and if you’ve watched any number of documentaries on previous decades, you’ll know that they all end in a world virtually unrecognisable from the one they started as. We’ll only fully appreciate this in 2030 but the half-way mark always bears signs.

Christmas trees should not be up at the time of the Autumn Budget.

I feel very strongly about this. Either curb your enthusiasm and don't put the trees up til December, or have the Budget in actual autumn. I don't mind which*, but red boxes and fairy lights do not mix

*the answer is obviously both

Can concur. I've been to the Frick three frickin' times and have only the wateriest memories.
(my viciously snobbish take on the Frick, having finally been, is that if you live in Europe and have put even just *some* effort into going to the big museums there then it just isn't all that remarkable as a collection, but bless the yanks for giving it a decent go)
