"This west-looking image of the landing site in the southwestern Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquilitatis) was taken from the lunar module one orbit before descent, while still docked to the command module. The Tranquility base site is near the shadow line, just to the right of center. The large crater at the lower right is the 23 km diameter Maskelyne, centered at 2.2 N, 30.1 E. The large black object in the lower left is not a shadow but a LM thruster in the camera field of view. (Apollo 11, AS11-37-5437)"

This is a brand new image of the Cat’s Paw Nebula!

To celebrate the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope’s third year of science, astronomers used the telescope to scratch beyond the surface of the nebula.
A section of the Cat’s Paw, a local star-forming region composed of gas, dust, and young stars. Four roughly circular areas are toward the centre of the frame: a small oval toward the top left, a large circle in the top centre, and two ovals at bottom left and right. Each circular area has a luminous blue glow, with the top centre and bottom left areas the brightest. Brown-orange filaments of dust, which vary in density, surround these four bluish patches and stretch toward the frame’s edges. Small zones, such as to the left and right of the blue circular area at top centre, appear darker and seemingly vacant of stars. Toward the centre are small, fiery red clumps scattered amongst the brown dust. Many small, yellow-white stars are spread across the scene, some with eight-pointed diffraction spikes that are characteristic of Webb. A few larger blue-white stars with diffraction spikes are scattered throughout, mostly toward the top left and bottom right. Toward the top right corner is a bright red-orange oval.

The Dumbbell Nebula (also known as the Apple Core Nebula, Messier 27, and NGC 6853) is a planetary nebula (nebulosity surrounding a white dwarf) in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1360 light-years.[1] It was the first such nebula to be discovered, by Charles Messier in 1764. At its brightness of visual magnitude 7.5 and diameter of about 8 arcminutes, it is easily visible in binoculars[4] and is a popular observing target in amateur telescopes. The Dumbbell Nebula appears shaped like a prolate spheroid and is viewed from our perspective along the plane of its equator. In 1992, Moreno-Corral et al. computed that its rate of expansion angularly was, viewed from our distance, no more than 2.3 arcseconds (″) per century. From this, an upper limit to the age of 14,600 years may be determined. In 1970, Bohuski, Smith, and Weedman found an expansion velocity of 31 km/s. Given its semi-minor axis radius of 1.01 ly, this implies that the kinematic age of the nebula is 9,800 years.[

NGC 7635, also known as the Bubble Nebula is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It lies close to the open cluster Messier 52. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot, 8.7[1] magnitude young central star. The nebula is near a giant molecular cloud which contains the expansion of the bubble nebula while itself being excited by the hot central star, causing it to glow. It was discovered in November 1787 by William Herschel. Shot taken on 2025-06-20 from my backyard.
