Walking is not only a natural right. Walking is a legitimate use of public space and people should be supported and encouraged to choose to walk. Being an essential part of sustainable mobility, walking improves health and liveability of communities. It's the past, present and future of mobility
Automated vehicles only make sense if they become a tool to liberate public space, helping reduce vehicle numbers on the streets and allowing more walking and cycling.

What about a public sharing system of automated vehicles and the complete removal of cars from our cities?
Almost half the Waymos on California streets are driving around empty. They're either waiting for the next customer or en route for a pickup.

If robotaxis scale, anything close to that level of deadheading would create crushing gridlock.

Walkability shouldn't be a "perk"

It should be the default

Walking shouldn’t be a health risk.

But extreme heat is making many streets too hot to use — especially for kids, older adults, and those without cars.

Pavement and public space design can reduce surface temps by 20°C.

Cool streets = walkable streets.

👨‍🦽‍➡️ Walking is the first and last step of every public transport journey, and its quality can make or break the experience.

From wide, smooth footpaths to long waits at crossings, the walking environment deeply shapes whether people choose to walk to the bus, tram or metro.

🚨 Oversized SUV fronts = danger on our streets.

Thanks to the insights of a @transenv.bsky.social and @cleancitiescampaign.org report we have signed a joint letter to the @ec.europa.eu demanding action to cap bonnet heights and protect pedestrians.

Streetcar ridership did not merely decline. It was deterred.

Streetcar passengers did not endanger motorists, but motorists endangered them.

In every city, people boarding, alighting from, or waiting for streetcars accounted for a large fraction of pedestrian traffic casualties. ...

Walking did not merely decline. It was deterred.

A sure sign of downtown vitality is “heavy pedestrian movement.” When “traffic” is redefined so as to exclude pedestrian traffic, and when walking is pathologized as a source of “delay” to motor vehicles, a city is in trouble.

Physical buttons are making a comeback in cars!
Touchscreens can be more distracting than alcohol or drugs. Slower reaction times can lead to increased risk of pedestrians being killed.
