This cosmopolitan spider is famous for preying mostly (but not only) on woodlouses. Individuals of this species hunt at night, piercing through the woodlouse’s thick cuticle thanks to their long and powerful fangs. Size: around 10 mm in length Time period: Holocene (present day) Conservation status: Least concern The animal drawn is a spider with a strong reddish color, yellow legs ad big fangs (the size of a leg joint)

Really taken with Haolong dongi, out today from Jiandong Huang, Pascal Godefroit and team. Just submitted news article on it. An iguanodontian with abundant hollow spikes across the neck and body, projecting from among conventional basement scales, and with rows of plate-like scales along the tail.

This basal euchelicerate has more to say than you may think. First believed to be an eurypterid, new specimens allowed at the end of the XX° century to reconsider it as a potential distant relative of horseshoe crabs. Some details on its flanks indicate that it could also rolled itself like woodlouses and modern horseshoe crabs. Size : around 10cm of body length Time period : Early Devonian Paleoart speculativometer : Few missing details The animal drawn looks a bit like a mix of an eurypterid & a horseshoe crab, with a wide head-part and long londy of 10 segments, a bit like a woodlouse

This species is one of the several extinct pycnogonids/sea spiders from the Jurassic of Western Europe. It’s also the only fossil one to be assigned to a current genus due to the striking similarities with modern species. This super spiny critter, named in 2024, is currently an enigma. Its morphology doesn’t align with the other arachnid orders, at best it’s supposed to be related to spiders, vinegarroons and trigonotarbids. As its name implies, this ancient horseshoe crab was discovered in Tasmania and lived some million years before the emergence of the dinosaurs.
