My favourite of the 1st Chrons, (and my favourite covers), but for sheer brutality, Book 1 of the 2nd Chrons (The Wounded Land) is hard to beat in fantasy.

As wonderful as these are though, I do think his sci-fi series (The Gap Cycle) is even better written.

We are now seeing the first long-anticipated use of AI for semi-autonomous cyberattacks.

Interesting interview with Dr Susan Schneider. I wonder if the "walled gardens" of the various providers will be a hindrance to this sort of thing? Or maybe there is more "inter-system" connection than I realise.

Why the AI “megasystem problem” needs our attention
A conversation with Dr. Susan Schneider on the AI risks we’re not talking about and why the fixation on AGI is misplaced.

This is obviously good news medically speaking, but I must admit my first reaction was "What's the point of a non-hallucinogenic psychedelic?"

This paper finds LLMs' ability to understand that others have different beliefs (Theory of Mind) comes from 0.001% of their parameters. Break those specific weights & the model loses both its ability to track what others know AND language comprehension

Interesting implications for models (& minds?)

Just checked and Facebook/Meta has been accessing my phone photos without me giving them permission (as far as I can remember). I'm normally fairly conscientious about these things.
This is the prompt to delete Facebook from my phone and never install it ever again...

Some Facebook users have noticed new settings that let Meta analyze and retain your phone's photos. Yes, you read that right.

The first doesn't surprise me at all. :D Too many sites probably being run by people with only a very shaky grasp of how things should be done.

The 2nd did, but on reflection, I suppose it's a natural extension of stuff like domain squatting. Spam...spam never changes. :D
