The books - especially A Touch of Daniel - are utterly brilliant. A vanished Northern working-class life perfectly and hilariously captured.
As there is such a dearth of comedy on tv for aspiring writers to watch I’m going to recommend a classic sitcom every day for you to find. I’ll start with I Didn’t Know You Cared (1975-9) by the brilliant Peter Tinniswood, a dry, mordant, weird show starring Liz Smith & Stephen Rea, amongst many.

It cannot be overstated how little of a shit the past Tory governments gave about:

a) people who live in the north

b) people who use public transport

and, above all:

c) people who live in the north and use public transport
On the 10.11 TPE train from Sheffield to Liverpool. Previous train cancelled. This train: only three carriages, half of one of these 1st Class. Perhaps 100 people standing. An entirely typical experience of train travel in the north. Brexshit island.

It’s a start ….
With Heidi Alexander replacing Louise Haigh as transport secretary, the cabinet is now 100% state school educated for the first time in history.

(Sir Keir Starmer's school was a selective state school when he joined, then became private two years into his time there.)

Today is thst darkest of anniversaries, 13 years since I took a call from the desk asking me to check out a report that Gary Speed, the football hero, my friend, was dead. I’ll never forget that morning.
My thoughts are with those closest to him on this awful anniversary.
Talk to someone.

Andrew Haigh has put together this starter pack for those new to BlueSky. It’s a list of the usual suspects associated with Leeds United to get you started here.

Welcome! My experience so far: having moderation makes a site less toxic - who would have thought? 😂
