🚨 Repeal 162 Court of Appeal Update 🚨

The appeal challenging Sections 162(a), 162(c), and 165 of the Penal Code, which criminalize consensual same-sex relations, came up today for hearing before the Court of Appeal sitting before Justices Kiage, Achode & Korir, J.A.

The Tunisian Association for Justice and Equality (DAMJ) has reported that some 71 LGBT persons, the majority of whom are transgender women, have been arrested recently in certain regions in #Tunisia. Many have already been sentenced. See the links in comments to learn more.

According to REDRESS, during Malawi’s session to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for its 4th Universal Periodic Review, several UN Member States urged Malawi to decriminalise consensual same-sex relations and take steps to protect LGBT people from harm. See the links in comments to learn more.

🚨 On 1 September, the unelected transitional legislative assembly in #BurkinaFaso unanimously adopted amendments to the country’s Persons and Family Code, including a new provision banning the promotion of homosexuality.

It is unclear as yet whether the law is in force. More information to follow.

Update from the Caribbean: Yesterday, the High Court of Saint Lucia struck down discriminatory, colonial-era laws that criminalised #LGBT people. This decision leaves only five countries in the Western Hemisphere where such laws remain in place.
