I want to take that term away from the general public so badly.
No, depiction is not the same as romanticization. An unreliable narrator who doesn’t understand something is bad doesn’t make it romanticization. You as the reader should be able to figure that out.

I really dislike it when people say that the story is "romanticizing" [blank] when a writer makes a decision to show a character going through something traumatic… like I'm pretty sure it's common sense that the author doesn't condone those actions 😭

I think I'd especially hate that if I was projecting my own damn trauma onto a character, and this is why this shit needs to stop. You aren't going to know what the writer has been through, and nobody is entitled to that information.
