The Haruspex Codex It is said that “The Haruspex Codex” was not painted but precipitated, like a sediment of visions. Its surface recalls the page and the stone at once: bruised oranges and bruised blues oxidize into one another, as if the centuries had continued the work of the anonymous illuminator. Where we might expect script, there are only filaments and arabesques—black branches that resemble writing in a language whose alphabet has withdrawn from memory. The commentators disagree on whether the wing‑shaped apparitions are figures of ascent or of dismemberment. Some maintain that they are the angelic custodians of a journey mapped here; others assert, with equal conviction, that they are merely the residues of an obliterated bestiary. The landscapes through which they pass (if indeed they pass) are equally unstable: what one observer calls rock, another calls cloud; what appears a river by day becomes, under oblique light, the shadow of an erased margin. A disputed note in the catalogue of a provincial museum attributes the Codex to a clandestine brotherhood of haruspices who, forbidden to practice upon actual entrails, transferred their divinations to pigment. Their art, we are told, consisted in reading the future in abstract forms—the curving of a line, the coagulation of a color. If so, this fragment may be all that survives of a manual of impossible auguries, a doctrine now reduced to pure ornament. The modern viewer, deprived of the key, is compelled to repeat the ancient ritual in ignorance. Before this panel, each gaze becomes a kind of involuntary prophecy: one sees wings and so anticipates flight; one sees a road and so invents a destination. In this way, “The Haruspex Codex” continues to function as an oracle, but an oracle reversed—the image no longer reveals the future; rather, it quietly reveals the one who seeks it.
