Very excited that this article is finally out! I hope it'll be of interest to anyone who: 1) is interested in the history of #nationhood & #nationalism; 2) is into the debate over Romanness in "#Byzantium"; & 3) wants to develop critical #Marxist frameworks before & after capitalism. A short 🧵/1
A colleague and I wrote an article for @ScotNational in response to @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social's apology following the self-commissioned Race Review, in the light of continued complicity w/ genocide & colonialism in Gaza. Read in full here: archive.ph/2025.08.23-0...

Absolute dream of a week/end guest lecturing at the University of Ghent on an Afro-Eurasian perspective on the Commercial Revolution of the Middle Ages. The students were great, and the merchant capitalist setting of the city couldn't have been more fitting!

One for all the epigraphers out there: late thirteenth century #Armenian bishop and historian, Stepanos Orbelean, complaining about the poor preservation of an inscription he was using (and largely recorded verbatim) in his history.

Jairus Banaji slaps once more - what should be another nail in the coffin of Brennerism/Political #Marxism, but sadly that satisfying story remains a useful origin myth for #Marxist intellectuals and organisers unengaged with history (understandably!).

Mind currently whirring at the fact that, of all the legal traditions in medieval Afro-Eurasia, only East Roman (Byzantine) law recognised interest without condemnation or mystification.

The longest chapter - by some distance - in the 11th c. casebook known as the Peira is on debt & interest.
