Hey gang, I'm putting together a TTRPG design workshop for people in my local RPG club.

I feel like zine month makes sense if your project is attached to a publisher (even a small one) who can do the heavy lifting in terms of promotion, publicity, etc. That's how we raised $1900 for From Midgard To Eternity (coming soon I promise), I don't think we could have done it on our own.

Found out Tsunoda Natsumi, legendary judoka from Japan and queen of the tomoe-nage, retired last month and for some reason it's making me teary-eyed, same as when I saw Mijaín López take off his boots during the 2024 Olympics. What a legend.

Found out Tsunoda Natsumi, legendary judoka from Japan and queen of the tomoe-nage, retired last month and for some reason it's making me teary-eyed, same as when I saw Mijaín López take off his boots during the 2024 Olympics. What a legend.

Innit? It automatically comes with so many levers and knobs to tune for whatever mechanics you could think of. It's so fun and makes your designer brain go whirrrrrr

I remember disliking the system at first, but it grew on me so it isn't nostalgia for me.
I also really appreciate the FFG era keeping a consistent (and really beautiful) art style in both the RPG and the card game. I love the AEG card game but the art could sometimes be.... not good....

It is! Your to-hit roll is governed by Agility (the standard roll is roll your stat+skill number of dice, keep your stat, so for 3 Agility and 2 Kenjutsu you'd roll 5k3) versus a TN modified by armor. If you're confident you can gamble and declare Raises (+5 TN each) for extra effects

Yeah there's so many good ideas in L5R 5e, I think Strife/Composure is a noble attempt towards fulfilling the more courtly/intrigue-y promise of the setting, and I actually like the custom dice. But it does not have the secret sauce.

And bows are exempt from the strength modifier! They do their listed damage and no more. Dead simple. You can teach it in 30 seconds.

What's really genius is that big-ass weapons, like a huge heavy warhammer would have a damage roll like 7k0 — keep *zero* dice, and rely entirely on your Strength to swing for potentially massive (over a hundred, with exploding 10s!) damage if you have the muscle to swing it.

The more trad/neotrad systems I read the more I cement my belief that L5R 4e had the right idea with damage rolls for weapons.
It is extremely simple. Each weapon has strict damage types in roll and keep format (like 3k1, meaning roll 3d10 and keep one), but you add kept dice equal to your Strength

Wholly different species. You can tell them apart because togruta have those horn-like protuberances on the top of their head while twi'lek only have the tentacle things (which have an in-universe name I can't remember)
