I have often bemoaned the dryness of many modern games. Somebody on the web wrote "boardgames are just math made fun", and I answered that many boardgames are math made not fun. In such games, scores are no longer a reward for good play, but the entire games just consist of calculations. (1/X)

Another 2p trick-taker I got in Essen: Kota Konno's Bubble Gum. The loser of each trick gets improve their hand, the winner scores points, trying to get as close to the limit of 14 as possible without busting. Not bad.

Two plays of Arthur Lacerda's 18 card microgame Pipoca yesterday. A tense duel that does not need a table. Struggle between improving your hand (flipping and turning your cards) and stopping your opponent. Brought home from #essenspiel. We found it fun and engaging.

On the weekend, we hosted a small trick-taking convention in Göttingen. 16 people and a selection of maybe 150 titles: trick-taking, shedding, and climbing games. It was heavenly, although I could only play 14 different games. Definitely want to repeat it in 2026.

Neulich habe ich auf Instagram ein paar interessante Zahlen zum Spielemarkt in einigen spanischsprachigen Ländern gefunden. Dort wurden nämlich nicht nur die absoluten Preise einiger ausgewählter Spiele verglichen, sondern diese auch in Relation zum Mindestlohn gesetzt.
