Astraea, by Kate Kruimink

Gorgeous, poetic historical fiction about a 19th century convict ship, carrying women and children to a penal colony. Perfect novella about liminal space, patriarchy and a little known history - quiet, atmospheric, yet somehow harrowing - I could not put it down.

Everyone should read Hellions by Julia Elliott, out next month from @tinhouse.bsky.social (thanks for an earlier copy!)
11 short stories, each as engaging, imaginative and perfectly unexpected as the last. Elliott has an incredible way of shifting from the mundane to the magical. I loved this.

When you find this many pellets under one tree you keep looking until you find an owl. Then spend 20 minutes finding a better view.

Please read Dengue Boy. This is my favorite kind of absurdism: fast-paced, entertaining and highly imaginative. Things spiral out of control, it's hellish and exuberant, then everything comes crashing back together in a triumphant, trippy apocalypse of an ending. #booksky #dengueboy
