Here to see if my writing can pass your personal Turing test in 300 characters or less.
The butter is hard when the toast is hot
Yet the toast is cold by the time it's not
Why oh why won't the butter be spread
Until the toast is just cold stiff bread?

I know I've not posted a poem in a while (that whole daily posting thing didn't last huh?) but I HAVE written draft lyrics for 3 out of the 13 tracks for my steampunk rock opera concept album, so the month hasn't been a complete... erm... Write-off. 😉

You can add "Like a light bulb" to every line of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and not only does it still work fine, it adds a whole new meta-subplot if sung as a duet.

To prove it, here's "Like a Light Bulb", a tale of enthusiasm, wilful stubbornness, doubt, and ultimately vindication.

So much for maintaining a poem a day. But here's a new one anyway.

This one only really works written down.

A farmer, whilst out with his plough
Developed a nasty old cough
The illness was rough
He kept fighting, though
And so, in the end, he pulled through.

Great-Grandad turned 100, and to celebrate the day
We gifted him a LEGO set - he did so love to play
Alas, upon receiving it he wept and bowed his head
And gestured to the box: "Age 4-99", it read.

I'm not saying ALL my December poems will be festively-themed. But this one happens to be.

It's called "Oh, Parody", because it is one.

Today's poem is about advent. Topical, right? Does that get more clicks? Who knows?
December 1, 2024 at 10:05 PM
Today's poem is called "Dragons" and it goes like this:

This one is called "Culinary Appropriation".

They say the Elgin marbles should be taken back to Greece
That Britain isn't worthy of that fine museum piece
It's not as though we disagree; it wouldn't be so bad
We're just afraid they also want to take back the kebab.

There was an old man from Belize
Who was quite allergic to cheese
One nibble of Brie
And a goner he'd be
No pizza for him, just Chinese.

Today's poem was inspired by a prompt: The weather and the British fondness for talking of it.

I'm so sorry.

No poem today - instead, here's a small fragment of a much larger world I've been working on for a little while. If you like it, let me know and I'll share more.

Another day, another poem in the bag. Hopefully it doesn't slip down too far and get covered in crumbs.

Something a bit different today. I attended a writing workshop, and we were given exercises to complete in 15 minutes each. So I thought I'd share the results. I think it's called a thread if I link my skeets together?

Thanks to the brilliant @leannemodenpoet.bsky.social for running the workshop!

Need to post a poem
But it's been a busy day.
Here, have a haiku.

Another day, another poem. I'm traveling today so this one is about trains. It's called "First Class".

Out of Character

There's more to say than ever can be said
Yet writing to constraints can breed success
For shorter posts are oft more widely read
Their brevity leaves no room to digress

Small comfort is that to me at this time -
I cannot write a sonnet in six lines.

I promise not every post will be quite as meta as they've been so far, but it's on my mind a lot at the moment and I've challenged myself to post a poem a day so we're rolling with it.
November 20, 2024 at 9:37 AM
Well, this is going to really mess with the algorithm. There IS a poem in this t̶w̶e̶e̶t̶ skeet, but it's longer than 300 characters so I'm screenshotting it.

It's another Bluesky-themed one - it's called "Starter Pack".

I should probably add tags so I guess let's confuse the real #starterpack feed.

Three Hundred

Three hundred days, not quite a year
Three hundred ways I miss you, dear
Three hundred dinners, breakfasts too
Three hundred sighs of "I love you"
Three hundred nights slipped sweetly by
Three hundred tears I must not cry
Three hundred dreams of you and I
Three hundred dreams of you.

-click-
-whirr-
-buzz-
-high-pitched electric whine-
-ominous hum-
-CLUNK-
-clatterclatterclatter-
-blinding white light-
-electric whine intensifies-
-CLUNK-

Well now. That's certainly different. Smells... New.

And yet, I can't help but feel I've been here before.

Hello world.
