a young Shucaris chases two Erjiecaris in the shallows of the Maotianshan Shales, kicking up fine muddy sediment in the process. it readies its masticatory elements anticipating a meal Shucaris is a kind of radiodont of uncertain taxonomic affinity, radiodonts are ancient soft bodied relatives of arthropods with stalked eyes, many flaps on their sides for swimming, a cone of stiff rods for a mouth, and long grasping appendages on their front with spikes to grap prey. Shucaris is special as it preserves special appendages used for breaking down prey that not all radiodonts had Erjiecaris is a small arthropod with a thin shell on its back and a long tail, almost like a shrimp with a straight tail a Gorgonichthys swims by the surface of the ocean, a large iceberg floats by, dropstones sink as the large chunk of ice gradually melts. The image shows a little view from above the waterline, showing the tip of the iceberg and three snowcapped peaks, the leftmost two have a glacier between them. Gorgonichthys is an armoured fish called a placoderm, a group of powerful predatory fish that have bony armour on their heads, and large toothplates for biting through their prey. Gorgonichthys' lower toothplates are so long that the top of their jaws have holes which the longest points slot into once the mouth is closed. a Xenodens darts back under the surface of the water after taking a breath, it sticks out its tongue to smell the surrounding water Xenodens is a small mosasaur (marine reptiles related to monitor lizards and snakes) known from just a jaw bone, its teeth were dogfish-like (tightly packed, with wide but thin teeth) used for slicing through flesh rather than just biting and holding, or crushing like its close relatives a Clidastes disturbs the surface of the ocean while swimming, it sticks its tongue out to smell the surrounidng water Clidastes is a kind of mosasaur (marine reptiles related to monitor lizards and snakes) that is very long compared to others, with relatively small fins
