234 years ago, enslaved men and women rose in revolution in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. They secured the first permanent abolition of slavery, and eventually declared Haitian independence on January 1, 1804. 🇭🇹

18 months ago we launched Heirs of Slavery - now we have over 250 'heirs' - people whose ancestors gained from transatlantic enslavement.
We hold workshops for these people and we support calls for reparative justice.

One of the great myths of 19th century British moral superiority, post-abolition of slavery. We exploited the Africans the Navy 'saved'. None of them went home.

Around 200,000 captives were intercepted aboard illegal transatlantic slave ships in the 1800s, mostly by the British navy

Nicely said, Dickon Mitchell. Britain, France, Spain and Portugal were most involved in transatlantic enslavement, but it helped enrich many other European nations and city-states (hello Genoa!)
