If you think of other members of the field as potential job-givers and potential trampolines towards your career, you won't make friends and nobody will ever call you to work with them. If you show genuine interest and passion towards others, you'll almost always get something good in return.

Networking is the cumulative effort of existing in a community where multiple people are sharing a common interest (video games as a craft and passion) and a common aspiration (working in the video game field). As a composer, game jams, conventions and discord communities are the way to network.

Instead, NETWORK. Networking isn't actually about work - it's about people. Going out with friendly faces you've met at a convention is networking. Chatting on Discord with likeminded aspiring or veteran devs is networking. Doing game jams is networking. All of this will get you somewhere.
