I never knew I couldn't count until I took up crochet. Chain one, two, three... When I get to twenty-six, I take stock and count backwards. Some have vanished again. Escaped their fate of being hooked and looped into a rectangle of warmth meant for next door's impending arrival. Healing? Only just.

We've made it to day 18 of TTLs celebration of the stories we published this year and today it's Fire Dust by @rosestrickman.bsky.social with the phoenix returning to Heliopolis, and the dust from it's wings promise healing - yet Neferet is not ready to accept it
On a day hot and dry as fire, a star appeared in the southern sky, a dot of red-gold that drew closer and closer. By the time evening fell, the Phoenix had arrived. Horns and drums sounded once more, temple dancers raised their sistra in praise, incense smoke cloaked the altars of Ra, and thousands ran to view the mystical bird, perched on one of Pharaoh’s obelisks. The entire city—nay, the kingdom—was ecstatic with joy and awe. Except one. Fire Dust Rose Strickman
