Great to learn today that a new mineral has been named after #MaryAnning. Anningite-Ce (Ca0.5Ce4+0.5)(VO4) was identified, appropriately, in a coprolite from the Cretaceous Gara Samani Formation in Algeria.

The Fossil Fest is also a great place to catch up. It was fantastic to meet Mary Anning aficionado Michael Mills aka Professor Flint, catch a performance & have a beer with him and Dean Lomax; see Lizzie Hopley as Mary Anning; visit the trade stands; and hear the Lyme Bay Moonrakers sing. 2/4

On this day, 29th Dec, in 2021, we were working on the album that was to become "These Curious Things!" This is the day the album gots name, and in so doing, became real. The journey to share Mary's story is far from done, and as I reflect on 2025, and look toward 2026, know there is much to do.

9 December 1833: In Lyme Regis Elizabeth Philpot writes to Mary Buckland in Oxford to tell her that Mary Anning was almost killed by a cart on the narrow bridge over the River Lym as she was heading for the beach before dawn. This was one of at least 6 occasions when Mary narrowly escaped death.

Extract of a letter from Elizabeth Philpot to Mary Buckland about Mary Anning: 'yesterday she had one of her miraculous escapes in going to the beach before sunrise and was nearly killed on passing over the bridge by the wheel of a cart which threw her down and crushed her against the wall, fortunately the cart was stopped in time to allow of her being extricated from her most perilous situation and happily she is not prevented pursuing her daily employment.' Early 20th century postcard showing the bridge (circled) where Mary Anning had her accident on 8 December 1833. The Fossil Depot to the right of the bridge had nothing to do with Mary Anning and was demolished with other buildings on that side of the bridge to widen the road in 1913.
