Potsdam Postcolonial Studies: Please join us this Tuesday, January 6, for Richard Hölzl's guest lecture "Historicising Ethnological Museums from Within? Impact and limitations of postcolonial provenance research". This event is part of our lecture series "What can Postcolonial Studies do?", which is open to students and the public. Find us here: Am Neuen Palais 10, 14469 Potsdam, in building 09, room 1.12, or join us online via zoom. Postcolonial provenance research is regarded as instrumental for a decolonization of Ethnological Museums. However, it does have certain limitations, methodological settings, as well as potentially Eurocentric traditions. This lecture will discuss some lessons taken from researching and curating colonial provenances at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich. Richard Hölzl is a historian and provenance researcher at the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich. He teaches at the Seminar of Medieval and Modern History in Göttingen. His publications include Umkämpfte Wälder, Gläubige Imperialisten, Managing Northern Europe's Forests, Mission global, Schweigen machen and Kolonialismus in den Dingen.“

Western democracies: we should all respect and recognize international law and global normative frameworks - but there are tolerable exceptions. Totalitarian states: international law and the UN Charter are imposed by the West - but there are cases when these should be respected.
