Watched Mad Monkey Kung Fu the other day. The movie is a bit long and I don't know if monkey kung fu is really my type of martial arts but it's undeniable that Hsiao Hou has the athleticism to match other Shaw Bros stars.

2025 was a year of some high-profile disappointments but putting this list together reminded me that it was still a solid year. It was especially a great year for Chinese animated films. Meanwhile Kensuke Sonomura continues to make his mark in action cinema.

Watched The Legend of Hei 2 the other day. An improvement over the first in every way. The action is over-the-top and well-planned. I found all of the characters to be endearing, especially Xiaohei and Luye on their adventure. The story is a mix of fun and touching character moments. Fantastic watch

The action is slick and cool as we see both criminals and police change outfits in their attempts to outfox one another. Things start to drag once they start to deal with the drama as some character motivations end up muddled. I would have been more interested in the criminals' perspective.

Watched The Shadow's Edge the other day. Didn't know it was a reimagining of Eye in the Sky which Cold Eyes was a remake of, a movie I greatly enjoyed. Jackie Chan training police officers how to surveil targets is fun. I think Tony Leung Ka-fai steals the show here as the merciless mastermind.

Watched I Am What I Am 2 the other day. I preferred the original's story but what they lack they make up for with a ton of fights, a strange departure from the lion dances from the first movie. That being said, the action is cool and the final fight may be my favorite this year. Glad I had time.

Natas doesn't seem impressed by the bismuth crystal near her head... but it's okay because she's an a-hole!

You can get your very own "A-hole" sticker with every t-shirt purchase until the end of January! 🤘⚡️

.. where they roll a large chariot/altar through a town that starts smashing into buildings and it's all practical effects. The last 30-45 minutes feel rushed as there's a plot twist that doesn't get fully explored but I found this to be one of the better Indian films I've seen this year.

Watched Kantara: Chapter 1. I didn't realize this was a prequel to Kantara (2022) but I enjoyed this more and thought the incorporation of religion and how humans interact with nature and the supernatural was more interesting this time around. The fights are dynamic and there's a cool set piece..

Watched Broken Rage last night, my introduction to Takeshi Kitano. While the film isn’t my type of humor, I think it’s a clever concept; they’ve shot the movie twice, once as a serious drama and another as a comedy. It’s only 67 minutes so it doesn’t outstay its welcome and some of the gags are fun.
