The king's breath catches, but then he frowns and rubs at his eyes. He thought he saw Polites, but that's impossible...

He must be more tired than he realized.

...And he's going to be avoiding Ithaca for a while.

And Apollo.

And probably everyone else.

He is absolutely hiding from Hermes again, especially because he is talking about wanting a baby and in a bad mood. 😶‍🌫️

He winces hearing that. The thought of Diomedes being one of the voices in his head, crying out in fear and pain... It makes his stomach turn.

"No, not yet..."
"Ah, I wish I could have been there to witness your journey. I would've loved to accompany you back home."

He takes Ody's hand and tugs him over to the half finished bed he'd been making. It wasn't done, but it was comfortable enough to sit on.

"You don't have to go back yet, right?"
"Honestly, that's a relief. Despite the whole wooden horse thing, woodwork is not my specialty...

You should have seen the raft I made to get home. It's a wonder it made it this far, honestly."

He thinks back, and concludes it probably has a little bit of Hermes' help there.

"Yes, precisely. Well summarized."
"OK so... you couldn't have a baby before, but now because of Hermes you can... and mom might be pregnant but you're not totally sure yet..?"
Deep, patient sigh.

"It is confusing... When I told you that we were too old to have another child, Hermes offered to return your mother's ability to carry a child.

We... haven't confirmed if she is pregnant or not yet."

"Ah-"

"I'm confused, I thought he got her pregnant-"

"Dad I don't get all this god pregnancy stuff..."

"That is a damn lie."

Grumpy old king face. 😒
Changing the lore, everyone!

From now on, it was not Penelope I "knocked up".

It has been changed to Odysseus, at his request :)

"NO."

😒
"Well, actually it's-..."

...... >:)

"With Penelope of Ithaca!"
"You're having a child? With who?!"

A quiet chuckle leaves his lips as he presses a kiss to his beloved's head.

"It's alright. I am working just fine on my own. I only need your arms to come back to at the end of the day."
Sighing into Diomedes' arms, Odysseus relaxes.

"Yes... Now that I am done being an idiot, what can I do to help with you with your project?"

"Of course not! I would love that."

He slight smile curls his lips, bringing the old king back into his arms, hugging tightly.

"...Is this why you have been waiting for me, every night? Why you've been talking about our life at the palace so much?"
"Is it too late to tell you I was going to ask you if you could help me train the green palace guards...?"

He chuckles, chagrined.

He chuckles, chagrined.
"No, don't apologise."

A gentle hand under his chin tilts Odysseus's head up so he could meet his eyes.

"I should have discussed this with you before. I can only imagine what you must've felt watching me waste my time here. I should apologise, my love. I'm sorry."
The anxiety he was feeling bleeds off almost immediately, realizing where his assumption has gone wrong.

"Genentì..." He whispers, hanging his head. "Forgive me for being an old fool. Of course you need something to keep your mind occupied - I should have... I'm sorry."

never my intention to leave you or Penelope. Not when you have shown me such great affection..."

Ach... I build an entire temple for every traveler and merchant in Ithaca and I am outdone by my son's baking skills.

It is difficult to be upset with him.
Your very own son, of course!

He's made me my own little alter and leaves me the best treats and pastries every day.

😠 Who??
Odysseus, you have some serious competition for the position of my favourite mortal.
January 20, 2025 at 6:05 PM
A frown of consternation. "Why would I think that? Because you are actively moving out? Because you don't seem interested in being in the palace with us anymore... Because you started this project without even consulting me, so I found out about it seeing you from the walls?" He points up the hill.
"What-?"

That was certainly not what he was expecting. His arms squeeze tighter around the old king, delicate kisses pressed to his head.

"Why would you think that? Of course I still want to be your husband..."
There is a tense pause, but he allows himself to be held. Finally, he speaks in a whisper, choked with emotion.

"Do you... not wish to be our husband anymore?"

even if he was still unsure of what the problem was.

"Talk to me, my dear."

He is trying so hard to put his feelings aside and look rationally. But his fear and hurt is pointing out every minute detail. He barely stops himself from pointing out any exposed nail or rough edge - things that don't make a difference to the structural stability of the hut.

In truth, (+)
The warrior pauses, sensing that something was wrong. He gives a quick once over to his hut. It looked alright to him...

"...And how would you say I'm doing?"

He steps up to his side, watching him carefully. What could have upset him so? Something within the hut...?

( Poor oblivious Diomedes )
The king's face is carefully neutral, which is already a sign he is upset. He never hides how he feels with Diomedes.

"I came to check on your progress," Ody replies, grey eyes surveying the home with a mix of interest, critical eye for the quality, and irrational desire to kick it to the ground.

Oblivious to the king's feelings, Diomedes looks up from where he sat on the floor. And immediately, a wide smile spread on his lips.

"Odysseus! What're you doing here?"

He's up and walking over to greet him, dusting himself off on the way.

"I don't think you've come to see me here before..."
Odysseus had been avoiding talking about it. He would greet Diomedes home each night, trying to show him how good his life could be in the palace...

Maybe he pushed too hard.

In any case, he arrives at the hut, knocking gently on the door frame.
