The current council tax system is unfair, inefficient, and long past its sell-by date.

It’s almost budget time! The Chancellor faces some tricky choices but there is a route through;
- A budget for fairness which means asking those with the broadest shoulders to contribute more first
- A budget to tackle the cost of living for working people

The ABC decade (Austerity, Brexit, Covid) hasn’t left the UK the happiest place. But if the government can turn the page and deliver real improvements to people’s lives, it would be a step toward a happier, better future.

Across Europe we are seeing a rise in toxic far right views among boys and young men. Parties like Reform are capitalising on this.

The post-cold war peace dividend is over. Increasing defence spending is the right move. But this can't be funded solely through cuts.

Went on Sky News today to talk about BP's decision to roll back on their renewables commitments - on the day that @thecccuk.bsky.social published their 7th Carbon Budget which clearly lays out how cutting emissions and taking action now can cut energy bills & raise living standards
BP's decision to ramp up oil and gas production and slash spending on low-carbon energy is a massive step in the wrong direction.

Renewables are the future and smart businesses see that.

The world has changed since Labour took office. With defence spending set to rise beyond 2.5%, the government should re-consider whether its commitments on spending and tax are fit for the future.

The government is right to boost defence spending—global threats are growing. But cutting the aid budget weakens UK influence. When we help countries, we build alliances. If we withdraw, China & Russia will step in.

Very humbled to be profiled by @rmcunliffe.bsky.social - but the real stars are my team. A big moment for progressives but we @ippr.bsky.social are up for the challenge.
“Our job is to make sure progressives have answers that are bold enough”

A dispatch from think tank land from me this week, after I sat down with Harry Quilter-Pinner from @ippr.bsky.social to discuss rewiring the UK economy (and D:Ream vs. REM)

🚨 BIG NEWS from me. So excited to be appointed as Director at IPPR, one of the most influential Westminster policy factories, at this incredibly important - but treacherous - time for progressive politics. We have a big job to do but the most talented people I know to do it.
🚨 NEWS! We're thrilled to announce Harry Quilter-Pinner (@harryqp.bsky.social ) as our new executive director.

A leading figure in progressive politics, named by The Sunday Times as a key thinker influencing Labour’s economic policy, Harry will now steer us into the future.

Up early to do Today programme on money in politics. Should Elon Musk be allowed to donate £100m to Reform? No. We should cap donations at £100k and crack down on foreign donations to political parties. @ippr.bsky.social research out on this soon.
