There's a new instalment in Past/Present, AHA's monthly column in The Guardian! On the eve of the 50th ann. of Whitlam's dismissal, James Watson and Frank Bongiorno consider how "one of the biggest deals in Australian history" played out amongst ordinary people. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
In a world with democracy in decline, we have much to learn from those who rallied against Whitlam’s dismissal | Frank Bongiorno and James Watson
In 1975, few Australians believed the dismissal of a democratically elected government was business as usual

And now the search for trains in TS12 can begin
And while I was away my chapter on representations of public transport in Taylor Swift's oeuvre was published! With thanks to the editors and conference conveners for their enthusiasm for this project—and to my friends who provided advice on earlier drafts!

Really enjoyed a visit to München Literaturhaus’ exhibition on Susan Sontag today, which included her Hermes jacket and a lot of personal writings, and a beautiful series of photographs of the interior of her NY apartment. But not a single mention of Annie Leibowitz?

Extraordinary news for lovers of Fleetwood Mac—and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks especially: more than half a century after it was first released on vinyl, the 1973 LP Buckingham Nicks has FINALLY been re-released and can be heard in all its glory in all the usual places!

I am literally begging European cities to put in a few benches here and there and some public toilets that are actually free. Why do y'all hate homeless people so much

Melbourne Uni's VC could sacrifice a fraction of her $1.6m salary to cover any purported financial losses of Meanjin and lose a fortnight's income while fostering the nation's literary culture

Most people spend a greater % of their salary on fuel. A VC who cares about culture would intercede

Visiting McGill University, QC, where the librarian has just apologised that they don't hold very many books on site, before leading me up six floors crammed with microfiche, maps, manuscripts, books, and so on 🤤

Air Canada has not met workers' demands so they're on strike. This means I won't arrive into Vancouver until 36 hours after I'd hoped, missing out on a trip to UBC-Vancouver special collections. Still, there are worse places to be stuck than my best friend's place in Darwin with its perfect sunsets!

Are we witnessing a platypus turn in animal history?

It was great to chat with the BBC about some of my research! www.bbc.com/news/article...
How the mystery of Winston Churchill's dead platypus was finally solved
The platypus was a top secret gift from Australia, found dead in his enclosure as war raged in the seas around him.
