Time for a mega-thread 🧵on the impending SNAP crisis. Why it this happening, what will the impacts will be, and what can you do to help? 1/18 (I think)

I've noticed the opposing team's fans only cheer when the opponents score on us. To win those fans over, I recommend we score on ourselves repeatedly; that will surely make them so happy they'll start supporting us. And I'm sure all our fans will keep cheering for us—who else is there to cheer for?

Hot new game in town to compare how much your ACA plan premiums are increasing!

THEY ARE BETRAYING EVERYONE RIGHT NOW AND YOURE NOT HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE RIGHT NOW
1. We need to fight hard for a good ACA extension early in December and hold Republicans fiercely accountable if they betray everyone.

Read every word & share with everyone you know. This is real life here in Chicago. Americans need to know this grotesque reality & stand with us.
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

When Senate Republicans vote against healthcare subsidies in December that they “promised” a vote on Chuck Schumer is going to write the most strongly worded letter OF ALL TIME!

Expel the yes votes from the party and cut off all their access to fundraising, then remove Schumer from leadership. Anything less is mealy-mouthed coward bullshit.
As this vote moves to the House, I stand with Democratic leadership as they refuse to rubber stamp the full-scale Republican assault on Americans’ health care and I am proud of the majority of Senate Democrats who opposed this vote.

I’m not convinced opening the government will restore SNAP. It was never tied to the shutdown. Trump just decided he wanted people to starve, and wouldn’t be surprised if they keep inventing ways to suspend the program.

Caving now means they literally did it for nothing and caused harm to people for nothing. Just absolute failure on every level.

Folks didn’t vote Dem in 2024 because the party abandoned its voters. If they cave on this, they’re cooked for good. The fascists will stay in power for years.
Caving on a deal that doesn’t fix health care is, and always has been, a giant betrayal of the American people.

Hold the line. Save health care. I’m a NO on anything that doesn’t extend ACA subsidies.

I know quite a few comrades on the ACA exchange. I used to be on the exchange for years. A doubling or tripling of premium costs will be a death sentence for people who NEED HEALTH INSURANCE to survive. PERIOD.

We've heard Democrats say as much for WEEKS. So what the hell??????

New — While some states have received SNAP benefits for November and USDA is supposedly pushing through all federal payments soon, that doesn’t erase the psychological terror of the last few weeks.

I spoke with 20+ SNAP recipients in 16 states about preparing for a possible future with no food:
The voices of SNAP
Recipients have become political pawns. They explained, in their own words, what Trump withholding funds has been like.

It’s no surprise that punitive work requirements have not led to better outcomes for families. History shows that improved outcomes are not a function of work requirements. Instead, they have been used as a blunt force tool to harm targeted populations through means like violence and starvation.
I spent two months researching the history of work requirements and the harm they've perpetrated over the past couple centuries. I'm really proud of this work, so please give it a read! I think you'll learn some stuff you didn't know.

💯

We already paid for SNAP with our taxes and the government is illegally withholding that funding.

We shouldn’t need to spend money a second time to make sure our neighbors are fed. Government exists for big collective action problems like this.
Stories like this around people rising to meet the SNAP crisis are easy to frame as inspirational and I appreciate the reporting here that stresses that this is a crisis of the government's making with long-term consequences that individuals alone cannot fix.
As SNAP benefits run dry, 'grocery buddies' are footing their neighbors' food bills
With federal food aid frozen during the government shutdown, there has been a wave of people rushing to help — sending gift cards or buying groceries for SNAP recipients in their community.

LA is under seige. So is Chicago. Organize block by block. This is gestapo shit.
Don’t think ppl understand the terror the Feds are unleashing on the streets of LA right now. Roving patrols targeting vulnerable individuals. It’s horrible.

There’s no one coming to save us except ourselves.
The past week+ has been really intense in Los Angeles. We need all of the help, support, & attention we can get. Feds are literally roving the streets snatch & grabbing vulnerable individuals. It's horrific. We need to do more.

Wow, huge credit to Katie and the rest of the nutrition team at @centeronbudget.bsky.social. USDA has now issued revised numbers because CBPP caught them either accidentally or intentionally making huge errors that would severely underfund SNAP, in direct violation of court orders.

Example: For a household of 2 with $600 in monthly net income, 30% of their net income is $180.

Their typical SNAP benefit is $546 - $180 = $366.

Under USDA's plan, their benefit calculation would be $273 - $180 = $93.

That's about a 75% cut.
