York University has announced the temporary suspension of admission in 20 programs, including Religious Studies (in which I teach). The administration cannot shut down programs directly but they can starve them, which is clearly the intention. (1/5)

The academic landscape of investigating Second Temple Judaism continues to evolve, revealing dynamic interactions of history, literary studies, theology, archaeology and material culture, and an ever-growing number of other fields such as gender studies, social sciences, and environmental humanities. The next STECA virtual conference to be held on 23 May 2025 seeks to gather a group of early career scholars (PhD students and postdocs) to present innovative approaches that challenge traditional paradigms, integrate interdisciplinary methods, and offer fresh insights into the studies of this period. We invite proposals for short papers (15–20 minutes) that explore topics including, but not limited to: 1) Fresh perspectives on religious practices, rituals, and community structures outlined in early Jewish literature (including but not limited to the Dead Sea Scrolls discoveries), 2) Interactions between Second Temple Judaism and the surrounding Hellenistic and Roman cultures, and 3) The afterlife of Second Temple Judaism: early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. The keynote talk on the future prospects of Second Temple studies will be held by Professor Charlotte Hempel (University of Birmingham), the founding director of STECA. Did I just read another endorsement letter where a male professor describes a female applicant as "hard-working," "caring," and "emotionally intelligent" as if these adjectives should convince the evaluator about their academic excellence? 🤦‍♀️ It is 2025. Please stop.
